This race to replace former Rep. Christopher Cox, who left Congress in August to become chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, includes 17 candidates 10 Republicans, four Democrats and three independents plus two write-ins.
If any candidate gets 50 percent plus one vote, that person will automatically become the next House member from the coastal Newport Beach-based district. If not, a general election will be held Dec. 6 and the top vote-getters from each party will be on that ballot.
The candidates for this race: Republicans: Marilyn Brewer John Campbell David R. Crouch John Kelly Scott MacCabe Marsha A. Morris Guy E. Mailly Marshall Samuel Sanders* Edward Suppe Don Udall* Democrats: Bea Foster John Graham Tom Pallow Steve Young Third party: Bruce Cohen (Libertarian) Jim Gilchrist (American Independent) Bea Tiritilli (Green) Write-ins: Delecia Holt (Republican) Steven Wesley Blake (Republican)

Polls closed 20 minutes ago. These are early results, but it the ration stays the same, Campbell will win it, there will be no need for a runoff.
So far, Gilchrist, the American Independent Party candidate is at 6%
Campbell is a long term politician, so I don't think he will change much despite his few new words about illegals.
Gilchrist was unknown before this race and a name does make a difference.
There is a guy who posts here, I think JF Scott who claimed to be running for the 48th as a Republican, I did not see his name.
How long to know the final results? Site you link to requires registration to acess. Would rather not get any more junk mail then I all ready do. Will you be posting a final result on this thread?
Huh?
Opps see you have a link on your 1st message. Thanks
typo: ratio -- i.e. if Campbell stays above 50%
Roger that . . . thanks.
Can't see how dems spin this one.

This is a highly Republican district, the Dems don't have a chance, unless the Republican vote gets divided among too many candidates.
It's one of those "open primaries", but if someone gets over 50%, he is elected, but otherwise there is a runoff.
I don't know how to create a link, here is the address: http://www.oc.ca.gov/election/live/e26/results.htm
Thank you. Same ratio as before. Any idea when it will be updated?
It's been an hour, but no updates. The early result just made it to the "semi-official" website ( the link in post 1 was to the OC "unofficial" results link)

Thanks for giving us yet another example of why the Dinasour Media is irrelevent. Anything they can do, we can do better.
It looks like they had the absentee ballots counted and ready for posting as soon as the polls closed. Maybe they're making sure that there aren't any hanging chad issues before they post today's results.
BUMP
UPDATE 9:20 PM PDT
Campbell still leading: 51.3%
I can't believe Gilchrist, American Independent Party Candidate is at 7.8%.
Considering that Campbell is barely over the 50% needed to win without a run-off, the Gilchrist voters may cause a runoff.
