OU bomber had huge explosive stash; Mystery remains over suicide outside Sooners game
World Net Daily ^ | 10/3/05

© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com Local and federal agents were carting away what was described as a huge cache of explosives from the apartment of the 21-year-old student who blew himself up outside the stadium where 84,000 watched a Sooners football game.

Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, a junior from Colorado Springs, Colo., died in the explosion, according to FBI officials.

Investigators believe Hinrichs detonated a bomb about 8 p.m. Saturday, just 100 yards away from the packed football stadium.

Police were overheard telling residents it would take "several trips and could take up to 24 hours" to remove it all, according to the Daily Oklahoman.

A canister trailer used for detonating or transporting potentially explosive material was being used to haul items away.

Officials said Hinrichs' motive for blowing himself up Saturday near the Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium during the second quarter of OU's game against Kansas State remains under investigation.

OU President David Boren said Hinrichs was a student "who had very, serious personal problems that led to this tragic death."

Because of what happened, Boren said, the FBI had taken over the investigation.

Boren said the student had explosives strapped to his body.

Investigators would not say whether they believe Hinrichs intended to go inside the stadium before the detonation happened.

According to a blog I read, his beard was a new one and in the style of a new Muslim convert. Can anybody else verify this?

Nothing like that in local reports.

Initial reaction from his family here >>>

As if figuring that out is rocket science.

PING, and here's an interesting tidbit on the blackout I copied and pasted from a blog:
We Aren't Getting the Full Story on the OU Football "Suicide Bomber"

Posted by Mark Tapscott on October 3, 2005 - 15:42.

University of Oklahoma President David Boren seems determined to have everybody believe Joel Henry Hinrichs III was merely a disturbed young man who decided to commit suicide by blowing himself up within 100 yards of a stadium containing 84,000 screaming fans of Sooner football.

Sorry, I don't buy it, at least not yet. Here's why: First, The Daily Oklahoman is reporting authorities found a large cache of bomb-making materials in Hinrichs' apartment. The cache is so big that the Oklahoman quoted one of the officials on the scene as estimating a full 24 hours would be required to cart away all of the material.

Suicide victims don't normally accumulate a large amount of bomb-making material in their homes. People intent on blowing up other people do.

Second, the proximity to the stadium suggests Hinrichs' target was the crowd, perhaps as people were leaving the game. But being an OU student, he presumably would have access to the student seating section and could have gone from that area to anywhere else in the crowd he chose.

What better place to detonate a bomb guaranteed to both kill and maim many, as well as incite terror and possibly a stampede that would kill and injure more people? My guess is Hinrichs was kept from reaching his target by a premature detonation. Add the proximty of the Micro-Biology building and you may have the potential for a kind of bio-bomb that could have guaranteed utter chaos in and around the stadium.

Third, why was Boren sufficiently familiar with Hinrichs to so quickly issue an opinion about his motive in the bombing? When he resigned in November 1994 as a senator, Boren was chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He left the Senate just as the Democrats lost their majority in the GOP sweep of 1994.

Add to his Senate years the presence of an active and long-established Muslim student presence on the OU campus stemming from the school's excellent Petroleum Engineering program, and it stands to reason that Boren has been privy to intelligence briefing as head of the school. Is that how he knew of Hinrichs?

Fourth, Hinrichs appears to have a fresh beard, which is characteristic of new Muslim male converts. His father told The Oklahoman his son was a quiet, intellectual type, but he had no idea what might have incited him to take his own life. We can only assume the father also didn't know of the bomb-making material in his son's apartment. Perhaps we are dealing with a recent or a secret convert?

Finally, if Hinrichs was just a disturbed guy who decided to kill himself with a bomb 100 yards from a crowd of 84,000 people instead of simply putting a bullet through his temple, slashing his wrists or some other traditional way of doing away with oneself, why is the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force now the lead agency in the investigation?

This is a duplicate of this post:

Wherein was remarked that this story seems to be getting the official HUSH treatment. Perhaps this is just to give the FBI time to track down any accomplices, but the tinfoil hats (myself included) think there is a certain amount of "lets not scare anyone" mentality being used here.

I can't wait to find out all the facts of this story. Just hope the MSM doesn't try to bury it because it may look bad for their new best friends, the Islamists.

They have already Buried it. Even Google news can't find it, which means its not appearing on the web sites of any major MSM outlet or even small newspapers with enough frequency to percolate up to the google-bot's attention.

This situation will undoubtedly be quietly handled and gently discussed in subdued tones until enough people lose interest. Then, about eight months after this incident, a small-print report will be issued confirming that, yes...this boy was a recent Muslim convert and attempted to carry out a terrorist attack.

That's precisely how the authorities handled the July 4th 2002 terrorist attack by an Egyptian Muslim at the El-Al airline section at LAX. (Fortunately, El-Al guards know how to handle slimeball terrorists and quickly put down that dumb animal on the spot.)

lol we posted this story, originally from 1:00 am, at exactly the same time over 15 hours later. Mine was pulled!

The Mods always liked you better anyway. "why can't you be more like hispanarepublicana" they would say. No wonder I have a complex!

The muzzies are not as stupid as everyone believes, dont know if he was a muzzie or not but they will start using WASP looking people to do their work. I don't think this was a prank gone bad as some have suggested, nor was it an experiment unless you count how many infidels can I kill as an experiment.

Mighty suspicious......

Of course, maybe he simply couldn't face the possibility of losing to Texas next week.

Regardless, we are very fortunate that he prematurely detonated. Could have killed a lot of people.

The silence on the national news front is more deafening than the explosion.

Instead of headlines, a few local outlets are exclusively covering a story that is clearly of tremendous national interest.

If I ever doubted there was some sort of nationwide control over media coverage, those doubts have vanished in light of what I am witnessing in this case.

Stunning. Absolutely stunning.

Very interesting post! Well, I hadn't heard about the beard yet, but on another thread, someone posted a link to a site that claimed they'd found Islamic materials in his apartment along with all the bomb making items.

"lol we posted this story, originally from 1:00 am, at exactly the same time over 15 hours later. Mine was pulled!"

No, it was pulled because you posted it about three minutes after this one. It was post# 1495912, and this one is post# 1495911.

That's the most likely reason why your thread was pulled, not favoritism on the part of the mods.
