Freeper Positions on the Environment (Vanity)

Posted on 09/23/2005 8:36:54 PM PDT by maui_hawaii

Everyone knows republicans get hammered on the environment in every single election cycle...

I just thought it would be interesting to hear freeper opinions about it.

On one thread I made the following post:

Now that I think about it many surfers are environmentally friendly...if that says anything. They want to protect the ocean.

Me, I think thats a legit thing to do.

If you see what washes up on the shores of Hawaii sometimes you will think people shouldn't litter the oceans either...

If your neighbors threw all their garbage in your yard you would have a fit...

Not to mention that if you are a sportsman (hunter/fisherman etc) you want to protect what you do right? Its in the self interest of the sportsmen (and even some industries) to protect the enviroment and to manage game. Given I am no kook about it, but I think it needs to be done. Otherwise my grandbabies will never have the thrill of catching a nice fish or shooting bambi.

Its just in Hawaii the ocean is in your face, and in Nebraska and 90% of America, its not close enough to home to worry about. The average joe doesn't see it...

Anyway I just thought this is as good of time as any to hear everyone's two cents on something conservatives get hammered on all the time...

I guess my position is that hunters, fishermen, the tourism industry, and basic citizens have a vested interest in protecting the environment to some extent.

While I am no tree hugger and I think bambi taste good fried...I think there needs to be a common sense approach to protecting the environment.

What if you are a bass fisherman but you go to the lake and see all the fish floating belly up? It happened down the road from where I am... someone poured their excess chemicals in the river and viola... no more fish.

We talk about gun rights all the time here...but what about this? Doves, quail, deer, rabbits, etc are going to have to live somewhere...

Add your two cents. I think it will be interesting...

The "environments" have falsely cried wolf on so many issues, that people might not take seriously the REAL environmental crises, like overfishing.

God knows the environment has no enemy worse than your standard socialist government. Think of how ruined Eastern Europe/Russia was by the time the USSR collapsed.

What we used to have in this country, like back in the 19th century, was some provision for what was called nuisance litigation - say, if a passing train blew soot onto your clothes that you were hanging out to dry. That got passed by as government decided that railroads and other companies performed a "public good", so they shouldn't be bothered by such suits. As a result, massive environmental regulation eventually took its place. Maybe we can revisit the old idea, though.

But of course, in order for it to work right, there'd need to be some serious litigation reform in this country all around.

I agree with you.

Many 'environmentalist' are downright crazy. There is no denying that. Like saying we can't drill in the arctic circle because of some mating habits of antelope...not to mention the footprint of the drilling will be minskule in comparison to the total habitat of the wildlife up there...

At the same time what IS our position? What ARE the issues?

The earth is more resilient and durable than environmentalists want to admit simply because crying that the sky is falling serves their socialist desires.

Remove all of the Cruise ships..they dump their "crap" everywhere! 3rd summer on the Cape in 20 years that the Vineyard Sound has been full of Jellyfish and "sh#t". The cruise ships only come every couple of weeks, Thank you Bill and Hil.
Have seen the same phenomena flying over Mazatlan, Tortola and other paradises... big trail of brown "effluvium" following a Cruise Ship..
Hubby got a very nasty infection from swimming in Puerto Vallarta...

Personally, I love mother earth. I don't love environazis. I think the earth goes through stages that environmentalists hender by their "need" to interfere.

I also believe that people aren't stupid about the environment. If something seems out of whack, they don't hesitate to "fix" it. We the people aren't stupid.

Here's the position of most conservatives I know:

We love the environment and want to protect it as we want us and future generations to enjoy it. We also want to protect it the most win-win manner that does not hurt human beings, whether by making them lose their job, their property, or lose their access to the wonderful nature that they are protecting. We believe that people who have access to or ownership of the environment have the most incentive to protect it, as you noted in your message.

Where we differ from the wackos who give the word "environmentalist" a bad name, is that it seems to us that the only measures that the environmentalists support are ones that treat human beings as the enemy, lobbying the government to take private property or limit its use, prevent access to wild life, and encouraging lawyers to be sew happy. We believe all of these measures are hurtful to the environment and do nothing but advance the agendas of the anti-capitalists.

Thats a pretty good one...

Seriously though, put some thought into it and tell me which issues are important?

For me, illegal dumping of chemicals and trash into waterways (including the ocean), over fishing and general wildlife management are important.

Of course that means protecting the habitat of those animals to some extent...

People sue each other too damn much.

At the same time if I caught the SOB who killed all the fish in the river he should get a butt kicking.

People can't even swim in the water anymore.

They are now killing their own, Let's Let them!

Good start Mount, this is a significant concern.

As much as I believe whole-heartedly in Capitalism, the system does incur excess. There are a whole lot of caught fishies that do not get eaten and are thrown out in the trash.

A possible solution is to encourage more hatcheries and fish farms. But I am not sure how market forces and job considerations would exactly play out here.

I agree that the earth is resilient. So am I, but I am not up for abuse...

What constitutes abuse in your opinion?
