Foreign mercenaries in New Orleans?
The Nation ^ | September 21, 2005 | Jeremy Scahill

Posted on 09/22/2005 6:01:56 AM PDT by Sam_Damon

"A few miles away from the French Quarter, another wealthy New Orleans businessman, James Reiss, who serves in Mayor Ray Nagin's administration as chairman of the city's Regional Transit Authority, brought in some heavy guns to guard the elite gated community of Audubon Place: Israeli mercenaries dressed in black and armed with M-16s. Two Israelis patrolling the gates outside Audubon told me they had served as professional soldiers in the Israeli military, and one boasted of having participated in the invasion of Lebanon. "We have been fighting the Palestinians all day, every day, our whole lives," one of them tells me. "Here in New Orleans, we are not guarding from terrorists." Then, tapping on his machine gun, he says, "Most Americans, when they see these things, that's enough to scare them."

The men work for ISI, which describes its employees as "veterans of the Israeli special task forces from the following Israeli government bodies: Israel Defense Force (IDF), Israel National Police Counter Terrorism units, Instructors of Israel National Police Counter Terrorism units, General Security Service (GSS or 'Shin Beit'), Other restricted intelligence agencies." The company was formed in 1993. Its website profile says: 'Our up-to-date services meet the challenging needs for Homeland Security preparedness and overseas combat procedures and readiness. ISI is currently an approved vendor by the US Government to supply Homeland Security services.'"

Please note: I do make a scan of lefty pubs to keep informed on what things they're gonna throw out. I normally do not trust this source, but given the subject, I felt obliged to toss this one out there, simply because this crowd might be able to answer this question: Is this for real?

Ive wondered about it. After David Hunt spoke of murder victims found with their throats slit, MS-13 or jihadis comes to mind. Personally I suspect MS-13 if there's any truth to it at all.

MS-13 is not active in Mississippi, and their numbers are very few in the New Orleans area. More likely Bloods and Crips although throat slitting is usually not their M.O.

My guess is that The Nation only has a problem with this because these folks are ex-IDF.

Pali terrorists? No problem in their eyes.

Then I suppose you'd be just as understanding if he had hired Farrakhan's Fruit of Islam? It's a matter of principle.

"veterans of the Israeli special task forces”

HA! What do you expect from 'The Nation'? Like Rush whispers so well in his 'commercials'... “Jooooooo's!”

If Farrakhan's Fruit is behaving legally to protect private property, I'd be fine with that. and the Vegetables, too.

There aren't many security groups made up solely of ex-Cub Scout Leaders and Retired Cops.

If they are acting illegally, that is a different story.

As long as they are professional and don't break any laws, there shouldn't be a problem.

Plus, I didn't see the nation handing out food and water, did you?? Why would you trust them to do anything other than run their mouths.

Well, I heard that the Marriott hotel hired ex-U.S. military (Iraqi war vets) to accompany the bus(es) that Marriott sent to New Orleans to pick up their guests and rescue them. The had to confront some angry people wanting to get on the bus but they prevailed.

Good for Marriott for taking care of their customers and hiring THE BEST.

I don't know about the Israeli commandos, but Audubon Place is definitely patrolled by private security. It's right next door to Tulane, my alma mater, and the houses are gorgeous.

My brother, a nurse, is volunteering in New Orleans, and for a while was riding with NOPD. He says that -- while he did not witness this, this is what people are saying to him -- immediately after the hurricane, when the lawlessness got started, cops and Navy Seals and similar guys started a vigilante group and bad guys started mysteriously drowning.

So some of the people that have been found dead were dead for a good reason.

Like the guy who allegedly committed suicide in the Superdome. He raped a little girl in one of the bathrooms.

As for "Israeli" -- a lot of Americans have duel American-Israeli citizenship, and serve in the Israeli military. And just might call themselves Israeli to add to the fear factor, because Israelis are famous for being tough.

Are mercenaries permitted to carry automatic weapons, if somebody calls the goons "security guards"?

What is the law?

What's the difference between a "goon," a "security guard," a "hired gun," a "mercenary," and a "rent-a-cop"?

I am kinda fuzzy on that. Isn't an eye-of-the-beholder type of thing?

Not if you're being handled by the mercenary, goon, hired gun.

One encounter, I guarantee you'll know the difference.
