Amid the chaos and confusion that engulfed New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck, a congressman used National Guard troops to check on his property and rescue his personal belongings even while New Orleans residents were trying to get rescued from rooftops, ABC News has learned.
On Sept. 2 five days after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., who represents New Orleans and is a senior member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, was allowed through the military blockades set up around the city to reach the Superdome, where thousands of evacuees had been taken.
No surprise here.
Well, I'm glad he had his priorities in order...
Hmm...something about the name William Jefferson and a (D) after the name...I guess it's unavoidable to act like an entitled scumbag!
He might as well use the perks of office, since most of his constituents are not going to return, I think that he knows his political career is at its end either way.
Another example of the "Protected Ruling Class" mentality.
Displaying once again what Democrats really mean when they whine about "equal protection under the law."
Who put these troops at his disposal in the first place? I confess I don't know, but I suspect it must have been the illustrious Governor Blanco.
The soldiers were forced to stop their life-saving work and wait for a politician take inventory of his household items.
Of course, the mainstream media will never lead with this story.
This sounds like an ethics violation to me. Using government property and employees for purely personal reasons. Like the Clinton staffer that used a military helicopter to be ferried to a round of golf. He should be investigated - but I won't be holding my breadth.
William Jefferson is not only a democrat but a member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
"authorities recently searched Jefferson's property as part of a federal investigation into the finances of a high-tech firm. Last month FBI officials raided Jefferson's house as well as his home in Washington, D.C., his car and his accountant's house."
Jefferson is a busy man. He's been the target of an FBI sting operation investigating possible public corruption and the possible illegal pocketing of hundreds of thousands of dollars in payoffs in an international business deal. In a raid on his house, the FBI found a large stash of cash in his freezer. Jefferson's lawyer told the press, "The congressman has lots of contacts. He's involved in advancing a lot of businesses on behalf of his constituents and states and in a number of countries throughout the world."
Guessing he only wanted to make a withdrawal from the freezer.....
He should pay for the cost of the two trucks and the helicopter.
And he has some nerve to complain about the helicopter rescuer damaging his french doors.
It was the LA National Guard. Blanco interference?
Calling Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean, Teddy Kennedy, Schumer, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, and the rest of their ilk--anyone of you guys have a comment about your Liberal cohort using his office for personal reasons???
I have no idea who will be eligible to vote in Louisiana's 2nd CD come November of 2006. However, if the Katrina diaspora keeps a couple hundred thousand New Orleans registered voters from exercising the franchise in their (former?) hometown, a district that gave Bush only 24% in 2004 may not be overwhelmingly Democrat in 2006. Combined with Congressman Jefferson's embarrassing use of the National Guard to check on his property instead of allowing them to help evacuate people and other recent ethics charges against him, this could result in a potential pick-up opportunity for the GOP in what was heretofore the safest Democrat seat in the South. I wouldn't be surprised for a couple of black Democrats to challenge Jefferson in the all-party "primary" in November (in which, if no one gets to 50%, the two top candidates of any party go on to a December run-off), and a Republican may thus be able to sneak into the run-off.
Are there any black Republicans in the New Orleans area who could be a strong candidate for us? I believe that that Bennett fellow who ran for Lt. Gov. as a Republican is from Baton Rouge, not NO or Jefferson Parish.
This typical member of the Congressional Black Caucus shows the true picture of the current group of Black leaders in America. It always amazes me how many common Black folk worship these criminals. But, that's not the worst part. These low life have led Black people into a position of diminishing political power as time moves on. Hispanics and Asians have outpaced Blacks at breakneck speed as Blacks have kept themselves tied to a political party and leadership that have hurt and curtailed their cause of economic and opportunity advancement severely.
The recent polls sadly show that the average Black person just does not get it, and continues to blindly follow the "Racism" rant. I am feeling sorry for them, because they are going down further, as the other American minorities take the leadership role through the path of diverse politcal and economic power. I wonder seriously if Black folk will ever wake up. The Democrat Party, CBC, NAACP, etc. is not their friend, nor their ally!!!
And...certainly the face that Congressman William Jefferson presents to the world demeans average Black people and sets them back even further. Go figure!!! One bright note, however, about twenty-five percent of Blacks polled, believe that no racism was involved in the "Katina" Hurricane follow-up. If 25% of Blacks ever vote Republican, The Democrat Party will be destroyed.
There should be a full court press to imprison this worthless bastard..
"All pigs are equal, but some are MORE equal than others...."
Semper Fi
Probably the money from the feds that was supposed to build up the levees in NO.
