Federal response to New Orleans was 'faster' than after Hugo and Andrew

... "Mr. Bush's performance last week will rank as one of the worst ever during a dire national emergency," wrote New York Times columnist Bob Herbert in a somewhat more strident expression of the conventional wisdom.

But the conventional wisdom is the opposite of the truth...

... "The United States military can wipe out the Taliban and the Iraqi Republican Guard far more swiftly than they can bring 3 million Swanson dinners to an underwater city through an area the size of Great Britain which has no power, no working ports or airports, and a devastated and impassable road network.

"You cannot speed recovery and relief efforts up by prepositioning assets (in the affected areas) since the assets are endangered by the very storm which destroyed the region.

"No amount of yelling, crying and mustering of moral indignation will change any of the facts above."

"You cannot just snap your fingers and make the military appear somewhere," van Steenwyk said.

Guardsmen need to receive mobilization orders; report to their armories; draw equipment; receive orders and convoy to the disaster area. Guardsmen driving down from Pennsylvania or Navy ships sailing from Norfolk can't be on the scene immediately.

Yes, but then a democrat was President, so no story was made in the press.

After Hugo and Andrew, federal aid wasn't withdrawn for a time due to hostile people shooting at cops, EMS, and helos.

a Republican president, a mostly-black, mostly democrat inner city area affected - for Democrats & their media allies, the perfect storm...unfortunately, they are really having to stretch the truth here to pin this on GWB and his administration.

This morn I made the mistake of turning on the tube and watching the latest news...BIG mistake! First thing outta the mouth of one of the reporters summarized Katrina this way, he said,"Katrina will also be remembered and Bush will also be remembered as the most hated president that came out of Katrina!" My television has been off since Friday! I'm sick of the "IT'S BUSH'S FAULT" "I HATE BUSH"..etc..crap while NONE, ZIP, ZERO, NADA, ZILCH of our party members have come and stood strong for the President!! Our party's PR machine is a totally travesty!

Tell E V E R Y B O D Y. The MSM is doing its absolute lowest best to pin this on the White House, despite the facts that are easy to see.

I never really took much stock in Orwell, but this may be newspeak for real.

Uh, Bush I was prez for both of those hurricanes, Hugo in Sept 1989, and Andrew was in August 1992.

But please, don't let facts get in the way of your statement.

great article! Jack Kelly's usual excellence....

"Journalists who are long on opinions and short on knowledge have no idea what is involved in moving hundreds of tons of relief supplies into an area the size of England in which power lines are down, telecommunications are out, no gasoline is available, bridges are damaged, roads and airports are covered with debris, and apparently have little interest in finding out.
So they libel as a "national disgrace" the most monumental and successful disaster relief operation in world history."....

"A former Air Force logistics officer had some words of advice for us in the Fourth Estate on his blog, Moltenthought:
"We do not yet have teleporter or replicator technology like you saw on 'Star Trek' in college between hookah hits and waiting to pick up your worthless communications degree while the grown-ups actually engaged in the recovery effort were studying engineering."
bwahahahaha!!!!!

With regard to people like author Bob Herbert, you have to question both their scruples and their honesty.

Clinton had Hurricane Floyd. FEMA took four weeks to get in because as FEMA Director Witt"less" told Jesse Jackson on All Sides, "it was very wet".

This needs to be said again and again. Grownups know that this rescue effort has been tremendous, one for the books. They managed to get in, get control, and evacuate huge numbers and they did it in a week.

That may not seem very impressive to people who don't know who to do anything. Its very impressive to the people who do.

And its a reminder to the adults out there. In the event of a disaster, you should always have the wherewithal to stay in your house for a week without help. A few cans of pork-and-beans stashed out in the garage, some bottles of water, a generator would be nice if you can afford it. A shotgun and a couple boxes of shells wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I spent all last week at the beach on vacation with the family. The beach house had cable T.V. We do NOT have cable at home. It's been a couple of years since we've really taken in any quantity of MSM Effluent and were totally amazed and taken back with the hostility and depths to which they stoop.

I'm glad I don't have it at home, and I just don't pay attention to it with the exception of what I glean from FR.

CNN has truly become a propoganda machine for the left.

Why didn't Bush have an exact replica of New Orleans in a warehouse?
