As I recall from Louisiana history class, the Atachafalya is a distributary of the Mississippi river, meaning that it flows out of the Mississippi, not into it.

We also were taught that it was the deepest river in America and produced the best tasting catfish.

How far from the main branch of the Mississippi does the the Atachafalya flow? I should answer my own question and look at a map, I guess.
