Mother's remark puts silver foot in Bush's mouth ['Yo mama!]
Chicago Tribune ^ | September 7, 2005 | John Kass

Posted on 09/07/2005 6:18:40 AM PDT by johnny7

I was all set to defend President Bush as a guy who really doesn't want poor black people in Louisiana and Mississippi to die of starvation and disease, no matter what the Democrats say.

But then Barbara Bush, the president's mom, went and dusted off the Bush family silver foot Monday. And she used it. While touring the Houston Astrodome, where thousands of Hurricane Katrina refugees have been huddling, Barbara Bush said they didn't have it so bad because, heck, they were poor to begin with. "What I'm hearing, which is sort of scary, is they all want to stay in Texas," she was quoted as saying in an interview on National Public Radio.

“I was all set to defend President Bush... ”

Yeah right... that's why all the urinals at the Trib have a picture of Bush taped on them.

Ha--What she said is true. I bet the vast majority of those on the Astrodome were on some sort of "public assistance" before the storm, and now they get more public assistance. What's the big deal with what she said???

"that's why all the urinals at the Trib have a picture of Bush taped on them"

The Trib is not particularly anti-Bush. It endorsed him both times, I believe.

Barbara Bush isn't the first person to have said this - it was public knowledge last week when these "refugees" were being transported out of NO - "I ain't neva goin' back!"

Are you kidding me? She trivializes what they've gone through, and the fact that they're now living in a 20,000 person shelter without beds and their own bathroom and so forth. I think it's odd that the hysterics over this are so fierce, but what she said was not "true."

Stupid liberal talking points.....

The storm has exposed the ugly truth that "War on Poverty", "The Great Society", etc....have been abject and utter failures. Govt is not the answer.

Why would it not be a cause for concern if we Texans have to absorb a couple hundred thousand people, the majority of which are not producers and creators, in an already badly strained public system?

Well I went and looked at the quote she did say.

I saw it in that the people who showed up in Texas were poor and had nothing. They were given a bunch of aid that they had no money or resources to get for themselves.

People with money or extended family in other areas could go or stay where they wanted.

The really poor were being helped by Texas.

People can twist any statement into what they think it means.

A lot of them have been on welfare their entire lives and this may give them a new start on life. Some may actually want to get a job for a change. How dare she state the truth! A step up for some from the gutter to the curb. Liberals don't want their constituents to become self reliant.

first of all, i take issue with your mocking black accent. second of all, the reason they weren't going back was that the city was destroyed!

The welfare queens of NO have realized that they can draw a check in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio just as easily as NO. Why would they want to go there again? Gang infested and destroyed, NO is history as far as they are concerned. I am bettin many thousands of these folks are now TEXANS permanently..............Hook'em!.........

Nothing, but it's bad politics. Remember Tereeeza's remark, after the floods in Pittsburgh? "They don't need clothes that badly--they can always go naked for a few days." True, I guess, but very dumb thing to say.

Were you in the Astrodome helping???? She was and she has contributed far more than most people in this country. How is she trivializing what the people have gone through? She's helping them!!!

You know Mr. Kass, I was gonna believe your screed about defending the President, but then I remembered that you are a fanatical idiot, so everything that people say about you on F.R. must be 100% true.

Ever been to a housing project or a Section 8 home lately? Most of them are trash. I figure if these people stay long enough at the Astrodome, they'll trash it too.

Mrs. Bush stated what I and others may have been thinking -- she just had the guts to put a voice to it, that's all.

Barbara Bush is not the First Lady, nor presdient. She is a private citizen donating her time, money, and energy---sha has done far, far more than the vast majority of Americans to help our fellow citizens.

look, i understand that liberals are going to start wheezing whenever they have a pretext. this is a pretext. i also understand that well-meaning people -- and a few not-so-well-meaning ones -- resist efforts to get people to be self-reliant. but this is a horrible tragedy, and no, things are not "working out pretty well" for the victims.

If you saw the ramshackle houses with no air conditioning where a large portion of those folks lived, you'd agree that living in the Astrodome was a step up. She was just pointing out the obvious, that they weren't in misery. Many of those folks have never stepped outside of NO.

So now they are spreading the poverty around by sending them to different states so that they can foot the bill.
