We were asked by the city not to be there and the Superdome was made a shelter of last resorts and, quite frankly in retrospect, it was a good idea because otherwise those people would have had no shelter at all.
We have our shelters north of the city. We're prepared as soon as they can be evacuated, we're prepared to receive them in Texas, in other states, but it was not safe to be in the city and it's not been safe to go back into the city.(snip)

We are not a search and rescue organization. We provide shelter and basic support and so we were depending, we are depending on the state and the agencies to get people to our shelters in safe places.

Ah the Red Cross, spending money for themselves.
I have long since abandoned the Red Cross.
Once again another example of how the state of LA failed its people.
What does that have to do with the article?

I gave to Catholic charities and Salvation Army this time. After 911 and some comments some officials have made, the Red Crescent is not getting my cash.
Well, let's not confuse the Bush haters with the facts okay?
If the comments that the head of the Red Cross are correct, then you are right on the mark. They should never have been told not to help out in NO.
One of the big problems for the relief effort is that there is no where to house the volunteers. They are awaiting Navy troop transport ships for housing. In addition all volunteers need to be innoculated prior to entering the destruction zone.
I heard that the Red Cross has a policy of not establishing shelters in areas where a hurricane is about to strike because they want people to evacuate - instead of remaining in the predicted disaster area. That sounds like common sense.
Sounds like they will only go in it when conditions merit that they are no longer needed.

unreported- Marty Evans has requested/seeking about 10k body bags. Vitter mentioned it today but the RC has been quiet. Sad.
Their lack of presence was a huge failure IMO. I just don't know whose fault it is.
The Red Cross has a long history of embezzlement, sexual abuse, fraud, you name it. Just Google it, tons to dig through.
It is just that after 9-11 they had a bunch of money ear marked for other major "events" that is why they couldn't give all the families of the victims money... because of other disasters.
Catholic Charities and the Salvation Army were on the move before the Red Cross... but the Red Cross does has been getting all the good press.
I understand all of that but this is not an example of there incompetence, this is an example of the States incompetence. The ARC bashing on this topic is overlooking the real problem.
SA = high speed, low drag, low maintenance, low executive salaries.
