President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I've just been watching a press conference organized by Mayor Ned Randolph of Alexandria, LA on the local public service cable channel, in which he reminds everyone that Alexandria will be home to the refugees for an indefinite, unspecified length of time.

Since there are so many concerns about making a general donation to the American Red Cross (especially after Kanye West's remarks during the live NBC fundraising concert earlier this evening), I'm posting this link from the United Way of Central Louisiana which gives local addresses. You can contact these charitable organizations directly and cut out the middleman, and be assured that your donation will go straight to people being sheltered in Alexandria and Pineville:

http://www.guidetohumanservices.org/gths_hurricane_katrina.php

One of the organizations especially requesting help during Mayor Randolph's press conference was LifeShare Blood Centers. Here is a link with info about their Alexandria locations:

http://www.lifeshare.org/donation/centers.html#alexandria

Please remember that long after the sensational headlines die down, Rapides Parish will still be hosting thousands of refugee families. Your donations will be a lot more beneficial if you send them directly to where they're needed most.

Thanks for your continued interest!

Buses, trollys, walking....but thats just the ones who worked and needed to be somewhere.

Even the ones who didn't work (and unlike some here I will continue to believe, until proven wrong, that most NO citizens had jobs and were not welfare leaches) would have had money for bus fare.

And if not, the Mayor could have made the buses free for special one-way trips out of town to the west and northwest. Somebody here has mentioned that the city did offer something like this but there were few takers.

Yoohoo Rev. Jackson, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russell Honore who is in charge in New Orleans is BLACK!

LTG Honore isn't black. He was my brigade commander when I was in the 3rd Infantry Division. He's a Ragin' Cajun, but certainly not black.

I had the football game on between AZ and Utah -- gave up on cable news after I saw Jackson and Sharpton. Figured it was better to have football on the TV.

My list of people I can stand to watch is so small I have to think who I can put up with. MSNBC is OUT and CNN is almost OUT. I watch breaking news on CNN until Wolfie comes on and then turn it to something else. The guy that comes on after Fox and Friends doesn't get on my nerves -- cannot remember his name right now. I like Fox's reporters who were embedded. Like I said, my list is getting smaller and smaller. :)

They will keep them until the families are settled and able to have their pets at home once again. Help in every manner is pouring in throughout the local Southern towns. Too bad the national media is not focused more on that.

LOL! Breaking News...Alert...Alert - ATTENTION! A vet in a small town has taken in some refugee pets...END ALERT

I wonder what the situation is in the other affected states? I am really concerned that NO is becoming the main focus to the detriment of everyone else.

A New Orleans police officer tells the crowd that MRE's will be passed out in front of the New Orleans Convention Center, Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, in downtown New Orleans.

IS THIS THE SAME OFFICER THAT WAS ON GERALDO RIVERA'S BROADCAST LATER IN THE DAY SAYING NO FOOD WAS DELIVERED!!!!

Actually, they *are* being put in Reliant until more of the Convention Center is ready.

This is a plan that Texas has been thinking about and revising for a very, very long time. Don't worry too much about it - we're looking at it as both a neighborly duty and as a dry run should something *really* bad ever happen here.
