Shep showed a dead body along the freeway. How low can you go to grandstand? Things are bad in N.O., but he didn't have to show it.

I suspect that you have no clue about emergency or crisis management of any sort let alone of this magnitude.

I can almost garantee that the police have a blanket order to not speak to the press.

And if the cop had no info or none that he was permitted to share then what was he supposed to do?

Cops, firemen, medics, soldiers, etc are not in a position to free wheel and do whatever they think is right.

Now if you asked me if this response has been properly conducted based on what I've seen, I'd say that New Orleans has fouled it up on every aspect.

But all y'all that have noting more constructive to do than bitch, gripe, second guess and pretend that you know what should be done by individual responders puts y'all in about the same class as those that blame Bush for the bad weather.

Just a buncha twits chippin' their teeth making absolutely no contribution at all. Like teats on a boar hog, useless.

So you agree with him?

On what basis?

You do understand that there is 90,000 square miles of devestation right? In terms of vastness of this disasterm it is way bigger than 9-11.

Most my life I've had a 'bug out bag' ready to go. Not long ago I had enough cash in a few currencies in my bag to (hopefully) buy my way out of the country I was in. Just in case, ya know, 'cause most emergencies don't insert themselves into your Dayplanner or Outlook calendar on their own.

I didn't see that segment either but I would think he would have to get the okay from higher ups before showing the corpse unless it was a live feed.

He may be in need for a break anyway.

What about the thousands who are at the convetion center?

The situation there will get better when the National Guard troops arrive and bring order from chaos. A news article just on the wire pointed out that a military helicopter tried to land several times to deliver food and water but that the onrushing crowd prevented the helicopter(s) from landing. Troopers then dropped supplies to the people from a height of 10 feet. Link.

Then there are those who will probably complain that one of the water bottles hit somebody on the way down or that the water was too warm.

"He is showing you the real news of the day."

I don't have a problem with him or anyone else showing reality but yesterday (or was it the day before) he was on a rant about "no water, no water" while the camera was showing shots of people right behind him taking hits out of Gatorade bottles.

It was pretty shameful disaster hype.

Getting to this thread very late--but I was thinking the same thing. Smith's "performance" (it wasn't a report) was staged and maniuplative--the tears and lip-biting at the end were rehearsed. He's trying to win some kind of "journalist" award in the midst of all this chaos. What a whore.

This view of the dead man has been shown over and over today.

He also in an interview with a homeless man. Let in run on and on about how the city had turned off the power, cut off their cell phones and on and on. Something about America has deserted them and aren't doing anything.

Don't they or anyone else know there are very few roads in and out of NO. There were numerous flat boats ,volunteers, ready to go into the areas to help the people out of the housing project and they were shot at and wouldn't go in.

There were also Doctors, they pulled out, that were shot at.

Without lights, communication or water except on the streets, I'd like to know how anyone expects to be fed watered and rescued.

That is stupid and disgusting. Why don't YOU go into the heart of this Hellhole and try to stay focused and empathetic and not fall apart!!!!!

Shep is doing outstanding in my opinion.
I agree with other Freeprs who find that it is revolting to whine about the style of the reporter during this nitemare! Why don't these armchair journalistic critics just STFU!

The problem is that so many of us feel helpless. We want to help. But what if we're in California? What if we have no money to donate right now as they're asking us? I have so many blankets, clothing, coats in my attic that could be put to good use. But they keep saying not to donate clothing. They want money. If i lived near the destruction sites, i'd go there and offer any help that was needed within my ability.

I probably won't donate cash but I did drop off some stuff for the kids at a local shelter with a couple thousand refugees.

If you can't do anything yet then don't participate in the bitching and griping and sniping that is going on on FR and DU.

It is nearly impossible to mobilize effectively for 72 minimum, especially on the scale that is needed.

This is unprecidented and too many 'freepers' (real Freepers are different than 'freeper' posters) feel the need to expose their total ignorance for the world to see.

Well you're wrong. People are killed every day and there's a reason why they don't show dead bodies on TV. It's called taste. It's no different here. If you want to see dead bodies check out the internet.

I'm not sure I understand your question. My position is that the leaders in NO were ill prepared for a catastrophe. As a matter of fact it was President Bush who had to tell them they better be evacuating their people. I also think police and rescue people and the NG arew doing all they can and that people are impatient. I understand the impatience of the people there. But I think people who are not there and only listening to the media should give the rescuers a chance. My position is exactly like you said. The devastation area is huge and it is going to take time. That doesn't mean they are doing nothing or don't care.

Exactly. Are these people uncomfortable? Yes. Have some died? Yes. Are they making their situation worse? Yes. Should the city have had an evac plan (similar to the get the vote out effort they roll out every election day) to get the people out prior to the storm once the mandatory evacuation order came down? Yes. It's basically a cluster screw.
