Shep showed a dead body along the freeway. How low can you go to grandstand? Things are bad in N.O., but he didn't have to show it.

I think most of the cops are in shock, because they aren't responding normally to anything, even the crime.

Count me in! He was especially nauseating last night. However, on Brit Hume's show, he started talking about all of the dead bodies, and Brit cut him off and said they weren't going to show that. Guess Shep is doing his own thing now.
Yes, I have been a reporter myself covering disasters, and you have no idea the toll it takes on you. (My brother who is also a reporter, covered the war in Iraq in 2003, and it really affected him)Shep has done a remarkable job, given that he is from the south and the emotions he must be going through. I think he is respectful towards the people he talks to and has not been one bit condescending the way many regular on-site TV reporters are. He seems to be very integrated into the scene, rather than being above it or too removed from it.
So you noticed that too. Nice to know we're not alone. I wouldn't mind twits so much if it wasn't for the fact that their posts on FReeper are read by those who look for ammunition to paint all Conservatives as a group of "twits". Wish we could put the "ammo" in a locked safe somewhere where it couldn't be taken and used against us.
There was this heartbreaking scene last night of a man walking up to a ditch of water and filling a bottle, and he almost got it to his mouth before the reported (I forget who) jumped in and said "Wait! Don't drink that, let me finish, I'll give you some."
Do you know how thirsty you have to be to drink water out of a ditch?
I like Shep , so to each his own ! Only if he would take off the cheesy Fox news hat .

Giving out information, so that refugees could know where to go is "serving" and in this case especially, "protecting" to get them off the streets and away from the thug looters.

Yeah I seen him confront a cop yesterday and ask why they are not doing more to help. The coverage is trash tv at it's finest.

Where do you tell someone to go, when every where is under water? My question is: What the heck happened to the Mayor of NO? Why hasn't he clearly communicated w/the police chief what officers are 'spose to tell citizens? It starts much further up the chain, than the local police. IMO.
Shep is just icky. I can't explain it better than that. But apparently alot of women think he's a hunk. I guess there's no accounting..... :\

Shep can be self important, but I saw that segment and the body was a long way from the camera, not very grisly at all. The image of an old man laying dead in the freeway with nobody able to do more than cover him up (sort of) spoke volumes about where the city is in terms of dealing with this.
I didn't see it, but last night my wife told me that Brit Hume said that the video Fox was showing was edited to remove anything too disturbing from it.
I'm afraid that in a society where public opinion can be driven far and fast by videotape (Rodney King beating, anyone?) the lack of grisly images during this coverage may be contributing to the reaction of the authorities to the crisis...While I don't think that pictures of bodies floating around would cause the Governor of LA to grow a spine, the outcry generated might lead to a demand for sterner measures against the knuckleheads (looters) who are disrupting the rescue and recovery efforts.

Thank you. I just spoke with a southern CA friend and she said that people really do not realize the scope of our situation down here. Perhaps Shep showing dead bodies will shake them. I think he deserves an award for his reporting on the 110 interstate yesterday.
As a former television reporter, I find Shep to be a sensationalist like Geraldo Rivera...building as much drama into the story as possible, all to boost ratings. One of my major complaints about him has been his lack of simple homework...he calls Louisiana parishes "counties." He also refers to the "President of the County." Shep, in Lousiana, the individual you describe is the "President of the Parish Police Jury." Just do your homework! And Shep is from southern Mississippi...he should know better!
Some of my coworkers are already there. Other teams left earlier today. New from the stricken area is not good, nothing encouraging so far.
I'm at a place where there is substantial ramp up for relief teams. And I hope I don't have to stay here in the rear, but that's not my call.
This morning a CNN reporterette was describing the horrible conditions within the Superdome - dead bodies, rapes, etc..- mentioned that noone had food or water. She also mentioned that she and her crew did have water and was told by rescuers not to say it too loud to let anyone around her hear that. She could've shared her water with others who were suffering more that she was.
