President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

At least Landrieu appears to be at least in control, can't say the same for the governor.

Maybe it is because a lot of us do not trust the RedCross anymore. Our donations are going to other organizations, like the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, etc.

You know, dem "tousand points o light", that do it because it needs to be done, not because they pay the high level execs "mucho dinares", and have spendy TV commercials every time there is a disaster...

Have we seen anything from the southernmost areas of LA..where the storm first hit?

The only thing I've heard is on WWL yesterday from the Plaqueminnes Parish president who said the levys were breached and the southern tip of the parish was "gone" and the river "reclaimed" the areas on either side of the river.

Sorry I didn't see your post to me on Thread 11 earlier--I posted before dinner and then just now came back. I'm sure my husband would love me to get off the pc, but I'm so sad about this.

it didnt look like they were having success with that fire.

That's what they said on CNN, exactly. That things weren't going well with the fire.

Again, it is so incredibly sad. A huge chunk of American history is apparently about to go up in flames. And if the fire doesn't take it, weeks of being in water will.

Any word on how the restaurants have fared? Paul Prudhomme's, Emeril's, and the Brennan group?

Are they looting the art, jewelry, and portable antiques or are they only taking tv's and athletic shoes?

Our prayers for you. I'm hope we are treating you well here in Atlanta. Except for the silly gas panic, that is. Sit tight. That'll be over in a day or two.

you would have thought that the huge screens within the superdome would have still been capable to operate with a satellite signal and the generator. Information about the scale of what has happened might well have keep the anger level WAY down.

Yes I watched Shep at 3pm and he is repeating the same thing at 7pm. "No one is telling the people where to go for help." My question is , If Shep has the ability to communicate with the people at Fox, why doesn't Fox news find out what the plans are for this group. There are so many evacuation projects going on throughout the city I find it hard to believe that these people are being ignored intentionally. Shep either you are part of the solution or you are part of the problem.

It's not FOX. I am watching WWLTV (a New Orleans TV station) and their reporters are saying pretty much the same thing. They interviewed some folks being loaded onto trucks by the National Guard and neither the folks nor the National Guard even knew where they were going.

Not EVERYTHING is the responsibility of the Federal Government... if they don't do something about getting these people educated and decent jobs and paying taxes instead of collecting NO and cities like her are doomed for failure.

Sadly, I agree with that. Another nightfall coming up....
