President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

There is a difference from 9/11. There was still power, and a limited area was affected. I agree with you that someone should be passing information somewhere, helicopters flying over with loudspeakers or something. But, I don't think 9/11 is comparable.

Amazing Grace is probably the most beautiful, moving hymn ever written.

I suggest you try to find an 80s Statler Brothers version. It's the most beautiful version I've ever heard.

Well I was in OKC when the Federal Building went down.

9-11 had a strong leader in New York.

Those cities had leadership for those disasters.

As to Katrina:
I believe the police work for the Mayor and the National Guard works for the Governor.

I do not like to throw blame but neither of the local or state officials give me an over abundance of confidence.

My opinion may change but at this moment I certainly would not like to walk into a firefight with either one.

Shep just received word from Jeff Goldblat that people are walking around the city with AK47's... report coming up live as soon as they get a link up.

I suspect what he's alluding to is walking around FIRING AK47's at will...

I beg to disagree. Shep is only getting in the way. He is not part of the rescue process. The harassment of the policeman was uncalled for. They are trying to do their job and do not need Shep sticking a microphone in his nose.
I love Fox but he is going too far. Remember, those people put themselves in harms way by ignoring the warnings. They are putting the rescuers in danger because they stayed. Shep,by his tone, seems to assessing blame.
Shep, Get out of the way and let them do their jobs!!

Did the Clinton administration do ANYTHING other than issue warnings about how terrible everything was going to be after they got out of office? I could have told you that in 1993.

"To: jeffers
I hope you are not making excuses for the pitifully poor management in New Orleans right now. "

I'm telling you, personally, that we don't have time to waste even asking that question until all of the people at risk are either safe or dead.

The Feds are in charge now. If they make mistakes that put people at risk, then that problem would need to be indentified and fixed, quickly.

But until all of those people have been rescued and fed and watered or buried, what happened two days ago or five days ago or years ago, simply doesn't matter.

We have higher priorities now.

This is a triage situation.

The overriding criteria right now how to be, "which action will save the most people?"

Nothing else matters.

BOTTOM LINE...

In ANY Major Disaster, and, GOD FORBID, one of this size. it's ALWAYS been known that it takes 36-72 hours to mount any kind of a large rescue effort...

Local municipalities are ON THERE OWN for the first 48+ hours..

They taught us that 20 YEARS ago, when I was a CD volunteer. The idea of community self -elp and self-reliance broke down when the first looter looked at the cop and smiled, and he walked on
