President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

I looked at those NOAA satellite pics of the Miss. coast....

Do you think they have determined how many people stayed in NO by taking pics say Sunday afternoon and counting cars in driveways, etc?

Heh heh,,what is your number so I can call? Just kidding.

LOL. They are probably aware of the problem, BUT it doesn't hurt to call the company with the numbers you dialed and the time so that the techs can research it further. Sometimes, the problem is tied to certain prefixes, so I believe it does help narrow it down. Also, depending on your rate plan and whether you might go over, you might ask them if you can get airtime credit for those calls.

"They do not stop to think that their decision to stay will place a burden on those who are trying to clean up this mess."

Or maybe they managed to live through the stampede that happened inside the Super dome (several people are reported to have died during it) and decided they would take their chances by not going to a New Dome with those same stampeding pron folks. I know I would be looking for an alternative.

It would be nice if they would let the people who need these services know that. And the FEMA workers at the Astrodome should have been aware of this as well. I see now on CNN they are interviewing Gov Perry of Texas regarding this and he is mentioning other shelters. It does seem that communication is lacking in this whole effort.
Are any shelters offered pet friendly? This has been a new option during Hurricanes here in Florida, and does lead to more people being willing to leave their homes.

One last question. Are they still allowing people to return to their homes on Monday to get valuables and such? Will they be able to return order to the city in time for this to occur?(Let alone drain the water by then?)

I feel sorry for all the tech folks trying to get all their systems back up and running. Imagine trying to figure out exactly where the breakdown(s) are. Yikes!

Stay well.

"Please no "this is God's justice." There are just as many holy, honorable, honest, decent, God-fearing people suffering the same losses as there are scum of the earth in this area today. Shame on you."

MrsCinAz said nothing of the sort. She has nothing of which to be ashamed.

Two months to drain the city, after the holes are plugged.

A lot of people left their pets in N.O. I know of one family that did.

I would have been up on that River levee walking north myself.

There was a guy in BR today who had walked the levee from NO.

"I am going to repost this comment that I made elsewhere, and it deals with the sudden blame game(And I am not a Bush Bot):"

I'll do the same. I posted this to another forum...

On Sunday, when they started herding the unwashed masses into the Super Doom, (not a typo), I went to my 90 year old grandmother's house and turned on the TV. I told her we were about to witness the biggest disaster the U.S. has ever seen. I mentioned to her that I knew she lived through the 'Great Depression' but this would be worse and happen faster.

Then I said I thought the administration in LA was herding the poor, sick, homeless, drug addicts and disabled into the Superdoom, (again, not a typo), to kill them so they didn't have to support them, and then would blame the deaths on Bush for cutting funding and sending troops to Iraq. The libs used them to get their votes, and now they were being sentenced to death, and would use their deaths to get reelected. Oh, and as a bonus, they get a bunch of our tax dollars to rebuild without the burden of caring for those listed above.

Sorry if there are those on this forum that don't like my thinking, but...

That is what I think.

I'm a Kentucky Hillbilly, (proudly stated), and I could have organized an evacuation from NO. This seem deliberate.

Roger that, no TV. CNN is mostly repeats from Larry King (God give us strength). They've got a vee-jay coming in between every break that mentions Houston. Then she bumps into the Larry King repeat.
