Turn Bases into Refineries part 2
Washington Times ^ | 4282005

Posted on 08/31/2005 11:49:10 AM PDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

In a speech Wednesday at the National Small Business Conference in Washington, President Bush proffered the idea of converting closed military bases into oil refineries. He promised to "direct federal agencies to work with states" to spur refinery-building and "to simplify the permitting process for such construction."

Has anybody called their congressman and talked about this topic? With the hurricane coming through where it did it can very likely dampen our economy.

That and some of the EPA standards on gas with all of the blends, its time to stop the insanity.

It seems like a logical idea, provided it's in the form of tax breaks or even temporary subsidies.

I don't want to see the country nationalize (ie "eff up") the oil industry.

Well I for one am not for just sitting around and waiting for things to happen. Given the nature of this messageboard, I doubt many of you are either.

Hope the mods don't mind the posting of an old link, but I felt it valid considering hurricane Katrina and the implications that we now face.

This is a excellent idea, which will help the LONG term problem (just like building 10 new nuke power plants).

For SHORT term help, suspend taxes on gas for 90 days, suspend requirements for 40 different blends of gas for the nation, pass legislation to end lawsuits against MTBE's (which the enviro-weenies are responsible for in the first place), proclaim closed military bases as "refinery empowerment zones", where they will have a 100 year lease on the land, be shielded against environmental lawsuits, and not taxed for 10 years.

The NIMBY faction will not go along with this idea.

Tho, I think it's a great thing to consider. All options should be on the table.

Apparently the head of the EPA has taken a step back. This is going to piss off the left big time.

This needs to be made permanent.

The NIMBY faction will not go along with this idea.

As the article points out, that’s one of the beauties of the plan. If you want to be NIMBY on the refinery, you don’t have much to bitch about concerning job loss in your BY when the base closes.

W plays chess when everyone else plays checkers....

I think it's a great idea. And since we in Va. are concerned about ultiimately losing Oceana and Norfolk - this would be something to consider.

Just wondering.
To be economical, do refineries have to be near certain factilities - ports for example so that they can take in crude and ship out gasoline and other refined products?
How many of the bases would be viable if there are such requirements?
With oil companies earning record profits, do they have an incentive to build additional refinery capacity?

Amen. If the government gets into the refinery business, gasoline will be half as good at twice the price, and will take five times as many people to produce.

This is actually a really good idea because the military bases are federal land, which is not subject to state environut restrictions and ordinances. It is virtually impossible to build new refineries in some states without 10 years of litigation, meetings, town halls, and hand-wringing. This may be a workaround to bypass the extreme nutcases who have stopped progess from being made.
