Mayor: hundreds, maybe thousands, dead in New Orleans
AP ^ | Aug 31 2005

Hundreds, maybe thousands, of people have died in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the city, Mayor C. Ray Nagin said Wednesday.

It will at least two or three months before the city has electricity. Restaurants won't be able to open; there won't be any commerce, he said during an impromptu news conference at the Hyatt Hotel.

"This is the real deal. It's not living conditions," he said.

Would it be faster to rebuild the city upstream than where it is??

Think of all the construction jobs...

That's amazing... people KNEW that the Hurricane was going to hit them. They knew it with enough days in advance. In any case, now it's time to send some help to this devastated region.

That many people did not listen to the calls to get out before. Wow, seems high.

Mayor: hundreds, maybe thousands, dead in New Orleans.

"We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in
the water," Nagin said.

He said there are others dead in attics.

Asked for a number, he said, "Minimum hundreds, most likely
thousands."

RIP. People who perished and New Orleans, a great American city.

This summer I wanted to take a driving trip from New Orleans up the Mississippi delta to Nashville and then over to Virigina panhandle. But, I couldn't.

Now I can never take that same trip. There's a lot lost forever.

I wish I'd just gone on the trip.

If Katrina has not already directly cost the lives of thousands, I will be grateful for the miracle, but very much surprised.

Not something we don't already know. I can also tell you that people are not meant to bake on top of a rooftop for more than 36-48 hours. I don't think you are going to find many survivors within the next 48 hours except in Uptown and a few pockets of dry areas.

More prayers to all affected. It's mind boggling, almost incomprehensible.

...rebuild the city upstream...

Where? Just move it to Baton Rouge.

The Spoof is being critical of the mayor with the following satire:
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin placed on suicide watch in wake of Hurricane Katrina

NEW ORLEANS “He looks stoned to me.” He looks like a man who can't decide whether to run away or stuff his head in the oven!” Comments like these were heard all over Louisiana as New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin made statements on TV in the midst of still-rising waters in the Big Easy.

“I just don’t know why this Hurricane Katrina thing hit here. I don’t know what to do about those big holes in the levees. Being a mayor of a city at a time like this is hard work. I really can’t blame all those folks who are looting now; they need food and water and I don’t have a clue how to get it to them. I'm scared I just don't know what to do!"

Asked about the Super Dome, Mayor Nagin said, “Look, stuffing tens of thousands of people into a huge building with a fabric roof seemed like a good idea when the hurricane was coming. We knew there would be no sanitation, food, or water available there and that the whole thing could flood, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. Looking back, I guess I should not have been smoking that big bag of weed when that decision was made.”

It certainly would be SMARTER, wouldn't it?

I doubt if thre is any ambiance left to salvage at the old site.

There's a lot lost forever.

I heard somewhere this morning that the Gulf of Mexico is now 40 miles further inland. I don't remeber the exact location.

This is a real, actualized loss. And I've read a number of folks ask the same question you've asked. And it could be a good idea except for the fact that the land upstream is probably already owned by someone. And there are tens of thousands who own property that is currently under water. I can't imagine a way to fairly rebuild upstream - especially in the entitlement world of today - without someone sustaining the losses that have already occurred. Either the people who have lost everything will start from scratch, the people who own the land upstream might get shafted, or the good old American taxpayer will have to pay. This is just not a fair situation, but I don't know that spreading the unfairness among more people is the way to go. And, no, I don't have any bright ideas or solutions. This situation just sucks.

I feel the same way. I've been before, but we almost made the trip and didn't. Goodbye Desire Oyster Bar. Goodbye Royal Sonesta. Goodbye Pat O'Briens. Goodbye Commander's Palace. Goodbye Brennan's.

"Upstream" meaning building up at Baton Rouge?

It's not really all that high when you think about it. There's something like 975,000 people that live in NO. So, let's say that 80% of the population heeded the evacuation orders, which is the number I've read here on FR. That leaves 195,000. If that 195k people only had a 1% casualty rate, that's still 1,950 people. I'd expect the casualty rate to be much higher, in the 4-5% range. So, I won't be surprised if there's as many as 5-8 thousand dead.

Would not risk my tools being stolen...would not even think of going down there from what I have seen so far. I don't care if they offer me my 32.50 an hour. Give me time and a 1/2 and double time after forty.

This would happen in any major city across the board. It disgusts me. And not one black lib is saying anything about it, which in turn tells me they condone it.

And do what with the 600,000 people living there?
