Disaster assistance
President Bush has authorized emergency assistance for the state of Louisiana.

To apply for disaster aid, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). (For the hearing/speech impaired, call TTY: 1-800-462-7585).

You can also apply online at www.FEMA.gov. Click on "Online Individual Assistance Center" and the screens will prompt you through the process. If you get a busy signal when you call the 800 number, try calling in the evening after 6 p.m. or on the weekends when fewer people are trying to call.

When you apply, you should have a pen and paper to write down phone numbers.

You will need your Social Security number, current and pre-disaster address, phone numbers, type of insurance coverage, total household annual income, and a routing and account number from your bank if you want to have disaster assistance funds transferred directly into your account.

They're going to bus people in the Superdome to the Astrodome in Houston.

they're saying to give money, toiletries (including portable toilets), clothing to the Red Cross, which will be overseeing the operation at the old Astro Dome (So glad to see that place put to a worthy cause!) They will also need volunteers, at some point, so people are encouraged to contact the Red Cross.

Or if you want your contributions to actually reach those in need, contact a real charity like Salvation Army.

B I N G O ! ! !

I was insensed this morning to receive a press release forwarded to me by a friend who had received it from FEMA. FEMA was asking for cash donations. When I donate cash I want to be assured what I donate will go to those who are suffering, NOT to pay the wages of someone who is helping. I would prefer to give my money to a group who is primarily a vounteer organization who doesn't have a stable of six figure employees.

We also chose the Salvation Army to donate to.

My grandparents were Salvation Army officers.

Those administering the aid are not getting rich on money contributed for the needy.

I'm appalled at the salaries paid to most leadership of charitable organizations.
