LOS ANGELES (AP) - A coalition of anti-war activists have launched a national campaign, claiming that military recruiters are unfairly targeting minorities at high schools.
The advocates plan to educate students and their parents "to keep our children from being cannon fodder," Rosalio Munoz, coordinator for Latinos for Peace, said during a news conference Monday in East Los Angeles.
The groups made the announcement on the 35th anniversary of the Chicano Moratorium, a protest against the disproportionate number of Hispanics being killed in the Vietnam War. The 20,000-member march ended in a riot and the deaths of three people, including Los Angeles Times columnist and KMEX-TV Channel 34 news director Ruben Salazar.
The activists said that too many Hispanic youths have died in the war in Iraq.
They want schools to limit the presence of recruiters on campus and to do a better job of informing students about how to keep the military from obtaining their personal information.
Under the Bush administration's No Child Left Behind Act, recruiters can obtain the names, addresses and phone numbers of high school juniors and seniors unless parents or students sign a form opting out.
Organizers plan to begin a campaign to urge students at about 30 schools to sign the forms.
The coalition will also discourage students from taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, a military recruitment tool.
"It is unconscionable that this is going on - the targeting of the working poor in our community," said Arlene Inouye, organizer of Coalition Against Militarism in Our Schools. "Our students are getting shammed into the military."
The Mexican culture has a good, strong military tradition, especially in Texas.
Every little town in Texas has a "wall of heros" in the courthouse. About half are always Hispanic.
Military recruiting does not include Latin Kings and MS-13.

I kinda agree - in a way - any kid who actually listens to these anti-American dnc loons is definitely UNFIT for service in thei scountry's military.

I went to high school with a group of Hispanic students from the same neighborhood. The only one who really made anything of himself was the guy who went in the service after high school. I know it's anecdotal but surely the military wasn't predatory to their group. They offered a future.

Aren't these the same groups that got the ROTC and recruiters booted off college campuses, where they could "target" the rich, white, liberal children of Democrat politicians?

True, those morons should focus on reducing the number of Hispanics youths joining the Cobras, Latin Kings, MS-13, 18th Street Gang, etc. Joining the military usually builds character and prepares young men and women to be law-abiding and productive citizens. The kind of people that... vote GOP.
I just hope that people realize that this fringe group does not speak for ALL Hispanics. Most American hispanics are very patriotic and love this country as much as anyone. I know because I live in Texas and see it everyday. They would consider these guys an embarrassment.
