Most of Europe is moving closer to the 0.7% goal, but the United States has long lagged; last year it contributed 0.16% of national income to foreign aid. Bolton's amendments make it clear that the Bush administration would like to pretend the millennium agreement never happened. This is a slap in the face for the aid organizations and international donors that have been working for years toward meeting the Millennium Development Goals. But it's far worse than that for the Third World, where their abandonment would be a death sentence for millions.

Does the study take into account the total amount of aid given by private citizens in all of the countries?
If not, it isn't a fair assessment.
Sending John Bolton to the UN was like sending a rocket scientist to clean urinals. A waste of a good man.

They got that right!
Well, I said what I said because Americans give a lot of money to foreign aid through private charities. I read somewhere that Americans give far more than any other nation through private donations, and if private donations aren't counted in, then the statistic provided by the article isn't a fair assessment of the total foreign aid given by any of the participating countries.

Yikes!!! We are pissing 0.16% of our national income down the "foreign aid" toilet???
That can't be right....

All I can say is "Amen", Goldstate. I have many issues with Bush, but his appointment of Bolton has been terrific. Maybe the new iraqi government an bring charges against King Kofi the Korrupt for his role (and that of his son Kojo) in the whole stinking "oil-for-food" scam. Seeing Kofi, Kojo and Saddam on trial for genocide aganst the Iraqi people would be a real treat!
Good. The American people are the most kind, giving and generous people on the planet, and don't need to be told to donate to the needy like some spoiled child. The United Nations wants to dictate morality it appears. Unfortunately they have no real basis to refer to, unless they follow our example.
What I wish for the UN I cannot post.
The best show is yet to come.
Chavez may be going to the UN about the Pat Robertson remark considering assination. If Bush doesn't "properly" respond and possibly allow extradition of Robertson to an International Court, then Chavez may go to the UN.
I cannot wait to hear Bolton give him the old "Cheney-Leahey" treatment.
So where is the UN plan to aid New Orleans? Where is the plan by the UN to take in donations from foreign countries to aid the people of Louisianna, and Mississippi? has anyone even heard the UN mention the hurricane or giving aid/????
Screw the UN we need to bring Bolton home and cease all negotiations with this third world organisation.
Well the PROBLEM you see, with private donation, is that often it is beyond the corrupt hooks of the left.
I really think the USA needs all the funds we now sink into that rat's nest called the United Nations to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Let's just call those funds in in lieu of the other nations of the world NEVER offering to help us when we have a disaster. It's way past time that we cut off those ingrates who live here and constantly try to steal even more money from US taxpayers.
"Most of Europe is moving closer to the 0.7% goal, but the United States has long lagged; last year it contributed 0.16% of national income to foreign aid. "
0.16% of US national income is probably much greater than 0.7% of half of Europe put together!
Also no stated though is that 0.16 our contribution far outweighs any other country that gives 0.7. It's a 0.16 slice of a much larger pie.
The US by far gives more money than any other country in the world, and this percentage game is the only way they can use to try and make it look like were not doing our share.
