Islamists seek to organize hackers' jihad in cyberspace

A Web forum for Muslim extremists is calling on its members to organize an Islamist hackers' army to carry out Internet attacks against the U.S. government.

The site has posted tips, software and links to other resources to help would-be cyber-warriors.

The Jamestown Foundation, a District-based nonprofit with a history of extensive ties to the CIA, said that it has monitored postings on a new section of an extremist bulletin board called al-Farooq.

According to Jeffrey Poole, a researcher for the foundation, the forum "represents a how-to manual for the disruption and/or destruction of enemy electronic resources, including e-mail, Web sites and computer hardware."

The new section was set up two weeks ago, according to a briefing written by Mr. Poole and distributed by the foundation, which added that one member of the forum has called for the creation of an Islamist organization, which he dubbed "Jaish al-Hacker al-Islami," the Islamic Hacker's Army.

All the high profile terrorists seem to have an engineer background of some sort. Yet with all that "knowledge" Muslims can't even build a decent septic system in their backward countries. Hackers? They'll soon strap on the bombs to be real brainiac deal.

If it were a BUNCH of moths heading towards the same lightbuld at once, maybe. Other than that..This country's 16 y/o's bored on a Sat. evening could drop their laughable infrastructure. Let's not even think about a concerted mindset effort by our true propeller head underground that are simply wating/looking for a reason to trash a network save/and or server('s)

I was thinking about this the other day when trying to figure out what their next big move(s) would be. My biggest fear is that they will attack Vatican City, but I thought about the possibility of Internet attacks. I hope the government is prepared for that. They may try to attack sites, but it seems doubtful that they would disrupt their own connections to sympathetic cells here in the States. After all, they have become quite adept at using the Internet for their planning purposes. What do you think? Do they care that they might disrupt their own business?
