Just reported on Fox News.
Will merge its mission into Bethesda Naval Hospital which is nearby.
Good decision: A bad, poorly located campus that needs updating really badly....has needed it for decades.
Bump again
Do you suppose that there's any way to pin this on the Pinkos protesting outside WR right now???
/sarcasm
This is not new news. My sister works for Walter Reed. She's known about this since early this year. Also, being a resident of Washington, D.C., I have read about this issue in the DC news often for the last several months. There are several very old, and historic buidlings on the base that DC officials have been squabbling over. The closing won't happen for about 4 or 5 years. Incidentally, I live across the street from Walter Reed. Very nice facilities. Sorry to see it go.
If they could raze the area and rebuild from scratch, I'd still have the security & COLA issues,,, but I couldn't complain about the campus.
Better to merge it into an already adequate facility.
Just as long as the DoD (and Congress) makes certain that
active and retired members of all the Armed Forces get
state of the art medical care in a setting of dignity and
honor,it doesn't really matter if it's in DC,or a few miles
away in Bethesda,IMO.
I agree.
If they made a deal to care for active duty and veterans, then they should live up to that deal.
My brother in law and I were just talking about this--he used to work there as an Army RN, and of course has mixed feelings, but over-all tends to agree that it's time for this.
Looks like the Code Pinkos will have to move their hollering smearfest down the street a bit.
I'm not following the BRAC stuff very closely but isn't the plan to build a huge medical facility at Ft. Belvoir?
Walter Reed is 96 years old. Seems it is time to move to a more modern facility.
And that land is worth a fortune now. The Army should make a nice chunk of change selling it to developers.
