There are conservative philosophers who are lineal descendants of Edmund Burke. Douglas Murray reviews two of them, Roger Scruton and David Horowitz. The best phrase belongs to Scruton: "Conservatism is founded on love of what has been good to you and forgivess of what has not." It speaks to the optimistic and forward looking nature of conservative thought in a portentous time. Let me end with another passage of Scruton that is already my favorite:

"Your ideals like your children, define you: between them, they are all that you have.

To have kept such ideals is a mark of integrity and cause for admiration, but to have led the way with these ideals - and provided such humane and witty evocations of why those ideals remain supreme - is cause not just for attention and reflection, but profound gratitude."

Being a conservative changed my life and made me a better and more loving person. I have nothing but profound gratitude of having a compass (the ideals of right and wrong which above all come from God, the Supreme Judge Of The World) to steer me by the sun by day and the stars in the heavens above at night.

(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)

I tried reading The Best of Burke but found it a little dry, although some selections are very interesting. That said, I have found Russel Kirk's work to be more current and easy to read.

One of the reasons I enjoy Horowitz so much is that, even though he is so much smarter than I can ever hope to be, he doesn't flaunt it. Rather, he uses it as a surgeon's scalpel, cutting away the layers of lies and revealing truth.

By the way, Scruton's assesment of communists is quite on-target. It reminded me of some people on THIS side of the Pond:
"In every place where they had achieved power they had released what was lowest in human nature, rejoicing in destruction and despising every loyalty that was not motivated by cynical calculation."

a generation which spent its sentient moments with its eyes fixed firmly on the wrong balls.

This phrase seems a little awkward to me.
