This phrase seems a little awkward to me.
...a generation which spent its sentient moments with its eyes fixed firmly on the wrong balls.
I thought so too and concluded the problem is "balls". We are accustomed to "keep your eye on the ball". Had he said "wrong ball" it would have been better and conveyed the same message.
