Nobody was duped: Sorensen denies allegations surrounding Air America by Ken Wetmore, KUAM News, Thursday, June 24, 2004
[The Guam Connection]
Heading the project [Air America] were two men with strong ties to Guam. Rex Sorensen owns Sorensen Pacific Broadcasting, which operates five radio stations on Guam and Saipan (Sorensen says his Guam broadcasting company is in no way connected to Air America). The other man is Evan Cohen who was born on Guam and operated several businesses on island before relocating to the states several years ago.
Most recently The Wall Street Journal wrote a lengthy expose entitled "Radio Daze - Inside Air America's Troubles: Optimism and Shaky Finances". The article, written by Julia Angwin and Sarah McBride describes Cohen and Sorensen as Guam-based entrepreneurs who a number of Air America's investors and executives say misled them about the company's finances.
It should be pointed out that KUAM maintains it is owed $20,000 by a now-defunct advertising agency previously run by Cohen. Cohen denies he owes the money.
[It is worth repeating the names mentioned in the Wall Street Journal article Radio Daze: Al Franken, Yoko Ono, Tim Robbins, Bob Visotcky, Evan M. [Montvel] Cohen, Rex Sorensen, David Goodfriend, Rob Glaser, Durst family, Javier Saade, Doug Kreeger, Anita and Sheldon Drobny, Joe Calvo, Mark Pangalinan [Pangelinan], Mark Walsh, John Kerry, Charles Cara, Rick Cummings, Norman Wain, Javier Saade, Bill Clinton, Janeane Garofalo, Chuck D., Randi Rhodes, Arthur Liu]
Madison investor weathered Air America's storm [Article of May 27, 2005 from The Business Journal, Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Rich Kirchen; some excerpts worth repeating with some info on key Air-Enron players]
[Terry] Kelly has devoted much of the past year to wrangling a financial storm that nearly submerged Air America. He and his wife, Mary, were among a half-dozen investors in the startup network who lost their initial $7 million outlay to the mismanagement, if not outright fraud, of the original management team.
The Kellys became involved in Air America in late 2003, as a result of a conversation with acquaintances at the Oakcrest tavern in Middleton. Turns out that one of the organizers of Air America was David Goodfriend, the son of Dr. Theodore Goodfriend, a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In December 2003, the younger Goodfriend and Air America's then-CEO Mark Walsh visited Madison to present a pitch to the Kellys.
By the time Air America held a lavish kickoff party March 31, 2004, in New York City, Terry Kelly realized "something was clearly amiss" with the organization because then-chairman Evan Cohen [aka Evan Montvel-Cohen] said he "forgot the check" to pay the $85,000 bill. Cohen paid it with his American Express card, Kelly recalls. Within one month, Kelly received a panicked call from David Goodkind, who had become Air America's general counsel, stating the company had no money and couldn't make payroll.
Kelly demanded a list of Air America investors -- Lear and David were not among them -- and the group met for the first time in New York. While Cohen and his partner, Rex Sorensen, had said they invested $12 million toward $30 million they had raised for the network, in truth, Air America had $7 million in initial investments, with little or none from Cohen and Sorensen. The investors learned that their $7 million "was gone" and the network owed another $2.5 million to creditors.
The investors dispatched an attorney to compel Cohen and Sorensen to resign immediately and sign over their stock to the investors. The entire startup crisis was captured on an HBO documentary appearing this spring called "Left of the Dial."
In June 2004, he [Terry Kelly] was named chairman of the board, a post he held until late 2004.

[I do not know what the following means, maybe nothing, but I thought I would pass it along anyway.. The FCC action of June 17, 2003 transfers control of all Pacific Broadcasting stations from Kathleen Sorensen to Rex Sorensen. What a tangled web we weave...
If Air America is an example, we can now understand why the liberals assume that everything proposed by conservatives are going to result in lost rights and protections. They are doing nothing more than projecting what they would do, if given a chance, on to others.
I think the Air America fiasco is giving us some very interesting insights as to how the liberal mind operates when it thinks no one is watching. The follow on question is, of course, how many other liberal organizations are also built on such a shifting foundation?
For 45 minutes starting at 9:15 on C-SPAN's Washington Journal:
Call-In
Air America Radio
C-SPAN, Washington Journal
Sheldon Drobny, Air America Radio Founder
I was just watching Sheldon Dobney on CSPAN. When asked about this scandal, he said that he could not comment on it. His nervous laughter and stammering were a dead giveaway that he hoped that the subject would be changed. He said that Air ScamAmerica's rating are geometric and that only after a year and a half, that they are growing faster than Rush Limbaugh. His also said that it took Rush 25 years to get to where he is (total BS). He failed to mention that AAR BOUGHT their air time and that Rush's growth was demand driven. It is clear that this fat slob liberal doesn't live in the real world.
CONFUSION TO THE ENEMY!
Honor among...Democrats.
Cheers!
Could end up not living in the free world as well?
