I've met a bunch of folks wearing cammies/boonie hats/et cetera at Vietnam memorials. Only a couple of them turned out to be real veterans. So I think I'm justified in my belief that 99% of those people are phonies. And most of the real veterans put on their best suits because they're honoring their buddies.

I was at a memorial dedication in Utah about 20 years ago--you could tell the one-term vets by their suits, the career military by their dress uniforms, and the phonies by (a) the cammies, (b) the long hair, and (c) the crowd of television cameras portraying them as "the face of Vietnam veterans."

He might not be a general but he did stay at a Holiday Inn the night before.

I can't understand why someone would do all this.

Total insecurity and lack of self-worth.
Some people dress up as Star Wars or Star Trek characters, some as high ranking military. Same idea.

I just fed soldiers.

After Basic and AIT, I was stationed at Ft Sill for eight months before going overseas. For five months I'd been eating whatever was put on my plate, and the first day as permanent party, the cook ASKED me how I wanted my eggs! When he broke one of the over easy yolks he offered to cook me another one! I took it as it was and still remember how nice the guy was 34 years later!

Thankyou. I would have left a tip, but, you made me bus my own table.

LOL! Me too! I think this guy is safe because he never ended up in Panama. I'm still looking for the guy who was behind my chow line......

And you're walking hand in hand with Cindy?

Hey dude, I was Doc in the Nam. I used to b!tch about the chow in the world. When I got to Nam I could have kissed you guys feet. You had a tough job, but you made good food and plenty of it. Besides, most people don't know that everybody's primary MOS is a combat soldier.

Thanks for the good chow and thanks for your service, we couldn't have done it without you.

I only got out a Corporal, and that's only because I was 101 Airborne Ranger (no Spec ranks in those days for us).

That "just a cook" line don't hold waterbuffalo crap with me. You all did a fine job under the circumstances you were given. It was good food! I never b!thched about it.

Found this:

Couldn't find the thread on Operation Iraqi Freedom, so I am starting a new thread.

Just wanted to let you know that I heard from Railbait's son, PFC Benjamin Viges (but he signed his note "Hart").

He thanked me for the 'care package' I sent a few months ago. I don't know how long it took for him to actually get it, or how long ago he wrote the note, but he is still overseas.

He says he "can't wait to get back to the states," and that he plans to marry. Says "her name is Carrie and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. Dad would have loved her too."

In closing, he wrote: "I have a new appreciation for my country since seeing first hand how evil Saddam was to his people. Thank God they are not his people anymore."

When I watch the nightly news and read the daily papers, I only wish the Iraqi people (those who are now treating the Americans like the enemy) could read the sentiment expressed by this one soldier.

Lets all wish him godspeed and a safe and quick return home.

Dellie
