Former Supporters & Samoan Caller Against Akaka Bill
Rush Limbaugh Show ^ | 08-17-2005 | Rush Limbaugh

There's been a story that we've been following on this program since its early days, and it's this bill in Hawaii sponsored by Senator Daniel Akaka, and it would basically create a racially exclusive government by and for native Hawaiians who satisfy a blood test. In other words, it would Balkanize the United States and set up a separate government in Hawaii run exclusively by and for native Hawaiians, and at first this had some support in the Senate. It had some support around the country because people didn't quite understand what it was, but there are two original supporters that have changed their mind on this. They have a piece today in the Wall Street Journal, Slade Gorton and Hank Brown.

They write: "The Akaka bill classifies citizens by race, defying the express provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment. It also rests on a betrayal of express commitments made by its sponsors a decade ago and asserts as true many false statements about the history of Hawaii and it now should be defeated," and the Senate's now poised to pass this thing. "The new race-based sovereign that would be summoned into being by the so-called Akaka bill would operate outside the US Constitution and the nation's most cherished civil rights statutes. The champions of the proposed legislation boasts that they knew native Hawaiian entity could secede from the Union like the Confederacy but without the necessity of shelling Fort Sumter. The Akaka Bill rests substantially on the 1993 apology resolution passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton.. . "The resolution is cited by the Akaka bill in three places to establish the proposition that the United States perpetrated legal or moral wrongs against native Hawaiians...."

Dated: July 18th, 2005: ** Very important legal document -- presumably Hawaii Attorney General Bennett's testimony for Tuesday's hearing in the House Judiciary Committee -- a 33 page legal brief filled with citations to show that Congress does indeed have the power to create an Indian tribe out of thin air, has a longstanding special trust relationship with ethnic Hawaiians, and citing examples of previous Congressional recognitions of native groups who had intermarriage and participation by non-natives. Ah, now there's a crackerjack question! Luau's every night with Tiki-bar styled blackjack tables! Then there'll be the hula-hoop roulette tables where every movement(spin) has a meaning. Hey look, it's "Sweet Leilani - just in from the sovereign territory!"

Any idea what this new sovereign territory would be called?

The Akaka Bill rests substantially on the 1993 apology resolution passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton..

Clinton could apologize to everyone except those he actually harmed. They were just advised to "put some ice on that".

Just starting to follow this over the past few days and I see the complaint of the ethnicity issue. However, it looks as it could possibly return sovereign rights back to Hawaii and eventually even lead to Hawaii secession from the union? If that's correct that could be good news for others

It's all about gambling....

It is about more than gambling. The leaders of the Native Hawaiian movement tend to be anti-American, bigoted, arrogant, and unpalatable.

the clintons never had a problem "apologizing" for the supposed wrongs of the United States (supporting the Greek generals, slavery (no credit to the 600,000 soldiers killed in the Civil War), Hawaii) -- it was their own wrongs that they would never acknowledge because they are, of course, perfect, infallible and better than your average American.

The one good thing about Hawaiian secession is that it would get rid of two of the most reliably liberal Democratic senators, two of the most reliably liberal Democratic congressmen, and four of the most reliably liberal Democratic electoral votes.

Billbears... The Akaka bill is just the shot across the bow.

If it wins, legally.. NC, for example, can be returned to "indigenous" people -- your land and mine -- can be under rule by legislators only bearing the correct "watermark" stamp upon their ethnicity. Any and all other American "ethnicities" be damned.

I understand that. However, if Hawaii does get this and eventually secedes from the union, another state could theoretically secede to prevent the same thing happening within their state. It's not the precedent of establishing state leadership by race that I'm looking at. It's the precedent of eventual secession from the union of even one state that interests me
