Grim Iraq reality dawns for Bush
Washington Post, via The Standard (Hong Kong) ^ | August 16, 2005 | Robin Wright and Ellen Knickmeyer

``We set out to establish a democracy, but we're slowly realizing we will have some form of Islamic republic,'' said another US official familiar with policymaking from the beginning.

I don't know, but perhaps the 28 pages censored out of the Senate Intel Report in 2002 might have told us.

Who is THEY?.

Hard line sunni muslims, leftovers from Saddam's regime, along with Syrian, Iranian, Saudi, etc, hard-line islamic extremists. None of them want a free Iraq.

We have been told in briefings that 'new' terrorists are coming in from the 'porous' borders. So they are not all Iraqis at least that is what the military has told us. The Iraqis LOVE us, it is the foreign forces causing a 'problem'

Many of the terrorists have been coming in over the borders, bringing money, explosives, etc. Without them, it is unlikely that the sunni muslims would have any resources to fight. You are looking at the situation with blinders on.

Wait I thought you just said that the ones killing Americans were people (Iraqis) wanting their control back. Which is it are they Iraqis that love us or foreigners that hate us coming into Iraq?

Pay attention now, I realize that you are having a hard time realizing this. There is a very small number of Iraqis that still support Saddam. They were in power during Saddam's rule, and they want to be back in power. They have allied themselves with foreigners in an attempt to stop freedom in Iraq.

(off to Afghanistan)

Well we will see wont we ( I heard that on MSNBC I believe..remember they have already been delayed once ) But we will soon see shall we not?

How many years did it take for this country to adopt a constitution after we won our freedom from British rule? Compared to us, they are on a fast track. BTW, the way that you worded that makes it sound like you want them to fail. Do you?

The bloody war continues there, and the Taliban is still present. So we will see shortly how stable" a democracy" our blood and dollars bought

The Taliban is a largely destroyed force. There are some leftovers hiding in the hills, but they are no longer a factor in the government of Afghanistan. Amnesty has been offered, and in the last few months many of the remaining Taliban have turned themselves in. You really do need to pay attention to what is going on around the world if you are going to be commenting on it.

(back to Iraq)

I think if your unarmored jeep is blown up and you loose both your legs you MIGHT think it is a catastrophe.

You were talking about a nationwide catastrophe looming in Iraq. To then narrow the focus to a single explosion and try to claim that is what you were talking about is downright disingenuous. Try to stay focused, ok?

But notice we use a carrot with the crazy man in N Korea and a stick with the people of Iran

Why is it a "crazy man" in N Korea and "the people" of Iran? Do you honestly think that the people of Iran support their totalitarian regime more than they do in N Korea? We are not using a carrot with N Korea. We are ignoring them, for now. N Korea has not threatened us outright. They have threatened retribution if attacked, but they have not openly advocated a first strike. Iran has.

You do remember what happened on 9-11-01 don't you?

And not one Iraqi on those planes not one. But there were ties to the Saudis that the administration secreted out of the country

What's wrong with a republic? That's what we are supposed to be, but IMO haven't been for some time.

I think that question was answered on Jan. 30th

(grin). At that time I was working for a company with a Deaniac lefty as boss. She was absolutely shattered. She actually said that she hoped that the elections would fail and the nation would decend into anarchy and civil war, just to prove Bush wrong. I was so stunned by that comment that I didn't have an immediate response. Leftists are despicable.

Good idea, I have been calling for an investigation of the Senate Intell committee since 9/11, when then Sen Bob Graham, said in Time mags special edition, that there is "some evidence" that Saddam was involved, evidence that is "credible enough that you can't take Iraq off the list". Page 43, Sept 24, 2001.

Political staff and Senators cannot be trusted. And ANY government who knew about 9/11 before it happened should be exposed.

The Senate needs to be cleaned out completely, as I have said for decades.

Jonathan Watts in Pyongyang Thursday February 6, 2003 The Guardian North Korea is entitled to launch a pre-emptive strike against the US rather than wait until the American military have finished with Iraq, the North's foreign ministry told the Guardian yesterday.

I fear the incompetence of Nihilistic American busy bodies who fear success and are willing to turn Iraq into another Vietnam (winning the war, and then surrendering the field at the expense of several million freedom loving humans). The day these "Americans" gain control of the US again will be the end of the Republic.

+++Only a morally obtuse person would make such a crude claim that Saddam's bloodthirsty rule was "better." You might not be a troll intentionally, but your a de facto troll because coincidentally you are repeating lefty talking points, the quote above among others.++

Been a Conservative member of FR long before you honey .

Iraq was a secular government in a Islamic nation. No one questions the cruelty of Saddam, but the question is are people living under islamic law better off? And it looks like that is what we will get there in a pseudodemocracy

"I do not believe YOU were the one I asked.. But I will believe that it is a VERY worthy cause when the 2 unemployed Bush girls sign up for service there"

?

How so? Please explain how the Bush daughters enlistment would turn this into a "VERY worthy cause"?

Really...... please enlighten us "neocons"

"FWIW I do not think we should just pull out....,"

Why not??? Did you not claim this was a "hopeless cause"?

"But I do know that that it is easy to sit back with a beer in hand and be willing to let others spill their blood in a hopeless cause".

I'll check your response after I run to get another beer /sarc.

Ah yes, those halcyon days of peace, free from all tension with Saddam in power and his iron fist doing little else but pen romantic novels and pose for another giant portrait.

LOL!

++You're a sick, evil and twisted personality. You are foul beyond measure and should go back to licking the boots of tyrants as is your fantasy.++

I do not deny the cruelty of Sadam but that very cruelty is what kept iraq from civil war . Both sides had a common enemy HIM.

Under islamic law if you steal you hand is cut off. Will that be a real improvement ?

Really? Not only has the crazy man threatened us but so has their Communist neighbor to the North .

Another U.S. official briefed on the Beijing talks said the North Korean diplomats made the threats to Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly on Wednesday, then repeated them before envoys from China, Russia, Japan and South Korea. "The Chinese were visibly angry and the others were taken aback," the official said. Both U.S. officials asked not to be named.

"Been a Conservative member of FR long before you honey."

Utterly irrelevant. Look up "de facto."

"No one questions the cruelty of Saddam, but the question is are people living under islamic law better off?"

A self-refuting statement.

And let me pull another one of your trollish statemtents: "How many have you sent over there ? Are you still of military age?"

NO PARENT "SENDS" A SON OR DAUGHTER TO WAR!!!! You probably know that but that doesn't stop you from perpetuating this lefty lie. You'd have us believe that adult men and women soldiers, who volunteer, can be used by their parents as moral currency.
