Two companies' GPS systems to be tested for sex offender act (The Lunsford Act)

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- State corrections officials will test two satellite systems starting next week that will eventually be used to track sex offenders.

The Department of Corrections says if tests are successful, they'll award contracts for global positioning system tracking devices to be used under the Jessica Lunsford Act.

Houston-based Satellite Tracking of People would cover northern Florida and G4S Justice Services would cover South Florida.

The state also wants to match GPS tracking data with crime data to determine whether people with criminal backgrounds are in crime site areas.

The Lunsford Act requiring sex offender tracking goes into effect September 1.

Nine-year-old Jessica Lunsford was kidnapped from her Homosassa bedroom and killed, allegedly by a sex offender. Forty-six-year-old John Couey faces trial for murder in February.

It is a start, but, the material must be of something that the average joe cannot remove.

We're dealing with the most vile form of criminals. If there is any possible way to remove a tracking device, they will find it.

You should read about what some barbarians did to a girl and her mother in Ireland.

"We're dealing with the most vile form of criminals."

There needs to be a classification system for sex offenders.

The 18 year old kid who gets caught fooling around with the promiscous 14 year old girl isn't a pedophile in the sense of the more visious stalker types looking for little girls and little boys to violate. Those are the types that need to be monitored.

I agree. Something needs to be done about the statutory rape laws. If schools are going to teach children that sexual experimentation is a good idea as long as they are careful and parents are going to allow their young daughters to dress like harlots, then an 18 year old boy shouldn't be branded for life because he meets one of these little sluts.

Install the device in the lining around the heart. Handy add-ons might include small explosive charges that respond to covert frequencies or electrocardio shock elements to 'adjust' behavior if needed.

This is stage one. Stage two is implants, such as those manufactured by Digital Angel.

Once the tracking system is thoroughly tested on a population that nobody cares about, the program will be expanded to another population, and then another. Eventually, every convict will be required to submit to implanting to quality for parole.

Once we're used to this, some bright guy will decide to link banking cards with implants. It'll all be voluntary. Of course. Like ATMs would always be free. Remember that?

I agree wholeheartedly...I think this act pertains to an offense against someone under the age of 11 though.

However, how long before this tracking system will be enlarged to track all of us? Big Brother, anti-Christ technology always starts with a seemingly obvious need. Then they come for us!

I think that given the permissive nature of today's society, that the states need to revisit the statutory rape laws. To stigmatize someone and post their name and personal information on the internet for engaging in consensual sex with an underage girl he knows from school is wrong.
