Welcome to Fort Winnipesaukee: Mitt's N.H. neighbors dread a `little Kennebunkport'

Residents of this quaint lakefront hamlet – already irked by Gov. Mitt Romney's traveling security circus – fear their town will become a locked-down ``police state'' should the Bay State pol's presidential campaign kick into high gear.

Among the gripes residents have against Romney's annual summer invasion of New Hampshire:

The imposing presence of his high-priced security squad rumbling through town and patrolling the waters in boats;

His massive, environmentally unfriendly waterfront boathouse;

Bright yellow buoys put up as a security buffer in the water around his lakefront manse.

``If he's running for president, this town will turn into a little Kennebunkport,'' said Laurie Jones, a 22-year resident and Wolfeboro Town Board member, referring to the seaside Maine town where the Bush family spends its summers. ``You won't be able to breathe. You end up having a little, tiny police state in your town.''

The town may get a hefty dose of Romney's surging political clout Sept. 17 when he hosts GOP bigwigs at his $5 million Lake Winnipesaukee estate to raise cash for his Commonwealth Political Action Committee. The estate features a three-story, six-bedroom, 3 -bathroom house, a sprawling $200,000 stone boathouse and a recently renovated $500,000 carriage house with guest quarters.

The boathouse is one of many oversized waterfront structures that have officials seeking to cap future facilities at 900 square feet. Romney's is more than 2,700 square feet, records show, but would not be affected by any newly implemented size restrictions.

Romney also ruffled feathers when he put buoys in the water around his property, seemingly to warn people it was a private area. The state made him remove the buoys because they violated lake rules, town officials said.

Why doesn't this guy understand that the rest of the country is not going to go after another RINO from North East.

Gov. Pataki (NY) doesn't understand this either.

Yeah, but Pataki at least has something to show after all those years being the great Governor of NY. Mitt put out a "report card" a few weeks ago, pretty funny when he has nothing to show for his Governorship. Oh, yeah in the last round of state elections with the Gay Marriage issue in MA, Republicans ended up loosing even more seats in State Legislature. There are now 6 Republican State Senators out of 40 (the rest are Dems). And in the MA House there are only over 20 Republicans out of 160.

Oh the horror. You mean Mitt Romney has money and has a big vacation house in New Hampshire? Surely he is not qualified to be president then.

"he put buoys in the water around his property" - that sound like the kind of thing Kerry would do. Romney must be another "beautiful person"

ahh. We (my dad) had a cabin there next to Steve Tyler of Aerosmith and my best friend in Vermont. Used to do a lot of body surfing from the speed boat back in 82-85... The memories...

Tell the Cow Hamshire people to get over it. Romney will be a flash in the pan.

"Lake Winnipesaukee"

Filmed in New York state, not New Hampshire. They only used the name.

Kennebunkport's pretty little to start out with.

And Lake Placid, the name of the New York lake (and Olympic site) appropriated and set in Maine -- where was that filmed?

Not only are NE RINO's the minority in the GOP, Romney and Pataki will split that faction. Frist is heading that way too.

I think that some RINOS look like GIL - lips puckered, swimming around in circles with the hope that being cute is more important than being effective.
