Tremor Shakes Western and Southwestern Montana (5.6)

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck southwestern Montana on Monday night, rattling windows and shaking buildings, but there were no immediate reports of any serious damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered about 23 miles northwest of Dillon. It was felt as far away as Helena, about 120 miles to the north, and some residents of Great Falls, more than 200 miles to the north, also reported feeling the temblor.

In Dillon, Beaverhead County Commissioner Mike McGinley said there were reports of broken glass and other minor damage, but nothing significant.

"We've got fire and ambulance personnel standing by" just in case, he said.

The USGS categorized the earthquake as "moderate," saying initial reports showed it occurred about 25 miles underground.

Just talked to a buddy in Three Forks, MT - his wife told him that the earth moved. ;-)

Hi Onyx! Congratulations on escaping. :-)

Art Bell is on Sundays only unless he fills in for George Noury. Premiere/Clear Channel cut back the budget even more and hired a lightweight filler guy to do Saturday nights on Coast to Coast. George Noury is still Monday - Friday for now.

I can't find George either. I'll have to try again. Maybe the website can tell me the nearest station that carries the show.

I'm about 60 miles from the epicenter. The house shook for about a minute. It was scarey for a few seconds. We contemplated getting out but the dishes never started rattling. It was an experience that, on the whole, is not desirable.

I'm in the Pocatello area, 150 miles straight south. Didn't notice anything at all here.

"The house shook for about a minute."

A minute is a long time in earthquake terms. Are quakes rare in Montana?

I'm in Hawaii and we've had 3 of those 5+ shakers in the last 6 weeks or so.

It felt like a long, slow roller over here in northern Idaho, north of Coeur d'Alene. Pots hanging in the kitchen rack were swaying back and forth, as were the lights near them. Other than that, it was a yawner. All the critters in the neighborhood got real quiet for a while, though.

No we have them but since there are so few cities/people usually no damage. I've been here 16 yrs though and this is the first one I've felt. Montana is a seismic state,
