BOMB SCARES JOLT MIDTOWN

By LARRY CELONA, SAM GUSTIN and CYNTHIA R. FAGEN

The city had a bad case of the jitters yesterday.

In two dramatic noontime incidents, a bomb scare forced the evacuation of Penn Station, and a tour bus was searched by armed SWAT teams who ordered passengers to hold their hands over their heads and file off the double-decker.

At Penn Station, a disgruntled passenger bound for Albany — identified by Amtrak Police sources as Raoul Claudio, 43, of The Bronx — was charged with making a terrorist threat after he allegedly threw his suitcase at a ticket agent and claimed it contained a bomb.

They are going to have to put up thousands of video cameras, like London has, if they expect to have any hope of dealing with terrorism on the NY subway system.

Bomb scare's come in by the thousands throughout NYC. When a terror bombing does actually happen again in NYC ala London, the police will be running around like chickens with their heads cut off because the terrorists will aim for chaos...and get it.

At least 1,500 bomb scares are reported in NYC on an average day.If you have 3-5 actually go off and then have to have officers report to the other 1,497...you can't convice me the chaos going on would not resemble the chicken's head cut off scenario.

I'd like to think they're al little more trained than
the chicken analogy. I spoke with a cop on one of the
platforms on my rather lengthy commute (this leg was Queens to Bklyn) and he said that they are not prepared for someting as what happened in London. However, not to be Clintonesk and parse words (is, is), his idea of not being as prepared as they could be may be that they cannot stop 100% of any actions. Well, I guess not. I also wonder how many potential incidents, all over the country, may have been thwarted but not reported (sorry about the rhyme). We have been told, agree with it or not, that we, the public, will not necessarily be informed of all possible incidents.

In 1976, I was a bartender (another life)at a private party on one of the Staten Island ferrys for the huge bi-centenial (I got that right?). A friend of mine, retired NYPD, worked at One Police Plaza (Headquarters) and spoke of an inordinate amount of activity and visible concern by all of the Brass. Something was ostensibly going down but didn't happen....and this was 1976. Something will probably happen somewhere here at some point. I, selfishly just hope I'm not near it or anyone I know. I was one block North of the WTC when that stuff went down on 9/11. I've had enough stimulation of that type for one man's life.

Be well all.
Dave

Idiot of the day award goes to Raoul

Very true. NYC just isn't equipped to cope with this well. I was listening to the police scanner all morning on September 12th, 2001 - they were running all over the place and had no idea what was going on. Inept, confused, scattered - should real bombs detonate, it would be much worse.

Any prediction by you I pay attention to now. I hope you are quite wrong both in the city you name and in the resulting chaos. One thing these terrorists know about America: we are too big, too farspread, to have any such chaos result in catastrophe for our country.
