Worried that the tone of the immigration debate is pushing Latinos away from the Republican Party, the White House is working with political strategists to create a broad coalition of business groups and immigrant advocates to back a plan President Bush could promote in Congress and to minority voters in the 2006 elections.
The strategists say Bush is planning to make immigration a top priority as soon as this fall, once the focus on a Supreme Court vacancy has passed.
A guest-worker program is favored by many Latinos and by businesses, many of them major GOP donors that depend on a steady flow of workers from Mexico and other countries. The White House effort is aimed at satisfying these groups while promoting tougher border security enforcement. The latter focus is an attempt to mollify a vocal bloc of cultural conservatives in the GOP some in the House leadership who argue that undocumented workers present a security threat and take some jobs

My guess is that a plan for AMNESTY will come forth, dumping tens of millions more illegal Mexican invaders, into our country LEGALLY -- many of which will be headed for either prison, the government welfare pig-trough, and to infest and bring down what is left of educational standards in our government schools.
Remeber how the Bush administration ordered the Border Patrol to bury reports taken from illegals caught crossing the border, who said (paraphrasing) that they were there because Bush had said he was considering an AMNESTY PROGRAM -- this was not the outcome that the Bushies wanted to hear, SO THEY ORDERED THE INFORMATION COVERED-UP so the American public would not hear it. Hard fact.
Thank You Washington, DC for doing such a fine job TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND OUR COUNTRY.
"Why no worry that the tone of the immigration pandering is pushing Americans away from the Republican Party?"
Because we have nowhere else to go. Just like black voters and the Democratic party.
It's SWING voters like Latinos who have politicians' full attention. And that's why this country is going to gradually turn into Mexico over the coming decades.
The best thing you can do is pick the right town to live in within America. A small town with a relatively high cost of living and little need for manual agricultural labor should retain its American characteristics pretty well.
But America as a whole is going to be sold out to the Gods of swing voters and cheap labor. Brush up on your Spanish.
President Bush will do anything to appease fellow CAFTA members.
Though only opinion....
I think 2008 is going to be all about immigration. Single issue. That's what will drive the next election cycle.
Bush is screwing up big time.
A part of any Bush immigration plan will be giving legal status to illegal aliens.
When do citizens of the United States cease to be citizens of the United States? When the federal government no longer addresses their concerns, but does the concerns of foreign nationals.
We are citizens on paper. We are not the preferred class in the United States. Bat guano ranks far above us on the list of valid concerns of our elected officials.
Damn those elected officials, one and all.
The "tone" is a direct result of Bush's hostility to border security. If he would start showing some common sense on the border, the tone would improve drastically.
Guest workers my butt, get them the hell out of this country, what is wrong with Bush? I am losing faith in our leaders, why can't they see what we see? Our social services are being drained, all I ask is that I get the same rights as an illegal alien, is this too much to ask??
I guess Bush is weak in math.
He's hoping to gain 30 or 40% of 10 % of the population, while losing 90% of the other 80%.
That's a good point about the Mexicans already here. There are a lot of Mexicans making 12 bucks an hour or so doing construction work. All of a sudden a few new truckloads of illegal aliens comes into town hungrier and thrilled to work for 8 bucks an hour. Bingo- the wages go down.
One thing that might help the situation is if the housing bubble bursts and a lot of these construction jobs disappear. A recession with high unemployment would help the situation as well- during the Great Depression the government was very strict on stopping illegal immigration. Not that I'm hoping for a bad economy, but a bright side of it would likely be reduced illegal immigration.
You're right Kelly, and for a guy that professes to be so in tuned with the hispanic community, this president is absolutely clueless on this issue. He has completely lost sight of the fact that illegal immigration causes the most harmful pressures on the "LEGAL" memeber of the hispanic community, this the community that he professes to support, yet undercuts hourly.
...Bush is screwing up big time...
Unless the goal is to put in Hillary and dissolve us into the North American Community.
Then he's doing great.
