Con Ed's sued by woman scarred by manhole cover

A WOMAN WHO was branded with part of Con Edison's logo after falling onto a burning hot Manhattan manhole cover is suing the utility. A lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan Supreme Court accuses Con Ed of allowing the manhole cover at E. 13th St. and Second Ave., to become excessively hot through a buildup of steam under it.

Elizabeth Wallenberg, 27, suffered "excruciating pain, disability and grotesque cosmetic disfigurement," according to the suit, which seeks unspecified damages.

The fall left Wallenberg with a "C" and "O" and part of the manhole grid burned onto her back, just above the buttocks, and with burns on her arm.

"It literally looked like a brand that had been applied by someone," said her attorney, Ronald Berman.

He said the insignia has since faded, and outline of the manhole grid has blurred.

But the incident will leave her with discolored skin on her back and arm for the rest of her life, he added. "There is nothing the doctors can do," Berman said.

Wallenberg, who was skateboarding when she fell, is now a factory worker in Portland, Ore., Berman said.

I see that you are the skeptic.

We will only see 100 F today in my area. A brown, iron manhole cover out in the Sun will reach about 135-140 F.

At 100 F outside temp, the tar used to seal cracks in the roadways will melt from direct heating from the Sun.

Thursday, it only got to 97 F, but with the windchill, it felt like 91 F.

Care to test your theory? Maybe today in Phoenix, AZ where is has been around 110?

A quick touch, no burn. Crash from your skateboard and just lay there moaning 'n groaning and you will get what you ask for.

It's round so it won't fall into the hole by accident, or on prurpose - no matter how hard anyone tries.
It can also be tipped on its edge and moved easily (rolled) by only one man.

Gleason is iconic, no question. I honor him for many contributions, among them that he personally pushed a program for the summer replacement for his show. He saw some of it and was impressed, and really got behind it.

That show is 'The Prisoner,' another one of my fave shows of all time! Thanks Jackie for giving US audiences 'The Prisoner' back in the day!

How sweet it is!

Why is a manhole cover round?

Because the manhole is round. Duh. ;)

It's dangerous if it's steaming hot, and you touch it. It's also dangerous if it falls on your head.

A number of people were killed when manhole covers exploded and landed on them, some years ago. I remember it happening in the Wall Street area when I worked there.

Oops. Well, it's a good thing it didn't happen here in my town. The Anacortes sewer system manhole covers say "ASS" on them. Seriously.

LOL! If the manhole cover you speak of had branded that poor woman, at least there would have been truth in labelling!

The "Hot Manhattan Manholes" would be a good name for a gay rock group.

That was the real Edward Norton. Here's Art Carney (aka Ed Norton) for you:
