Preserving modesty in the pool (Muslim women in Seattle)
Seattle Times ^ | July 19, 2005 | Lornet Turnbull

Posted on 07/19/2005 1:03:41 PM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

It's Saturday evening, the end of a hot day, and a group of women and children have gathered at North Seattle's Meadowbrook Pool for their monthly swim.

Most of the pool staff has left, except for two female lifeguards, who on this day will be on duty for the next two hours.

The women and children — all Muslims — have been swimming in private once a month at Meadowbrook as part of a program organized by the North Seattle Family Center.

Because Islam requires Muslim women to fully cover themselves in public, swimming in pools or the ocean is largely off-limits for many.

But across the Puget Sound area, that's starting to change as public and private pools at times are sending home their male staff members, covering up their windows and allowing women of faith to swim alone and in private...

Access to these pools is not free; the groups, like all others that use these facilities, pay a rental fee....

In my opinion, this is rather nice, actually.

"In my opinion, this is rather nice, actually."

Are you nuts? You think it's rather nice to be completely segregated?!

If they pay an extra fee to cover the cost, and the public is not deprived of their regular use, I don't have a problem with it.

However, with the way the rulings of "separation of church and state" are going, I would think this would fit into the irrationality that these people reason with. If the boy scouts can't pay extra to use a government facility, why should these women?

We rented a city pool for the homeschool association. I don't see why Moslem women and children shouldn't.

Slowly, but surely, America's society modifies itself for muslim demands.

Boy, killing 3000 Americans in broad daylight works, doesn't it.

What's next, segregated sections for women in eateries and other public places?

"When they swim, the women wear three-quarter-length pants — spandex or free-flowing garments — covering their bodies from navel to knees, as they believe their religion requires.

Their tops are an assortment of T-shirts and modest swimwear."

****

At the pool where I take my water aerobics class, there are classes with Muslim women and this is how they are attired. I don't believe though that they are segregated -- I believe men and women take classes together. Of course, it might all depend on the particular Muslim sect -- some are more conservative than others.

If they are allowed to rent the pool for a private function from time to time that's fine with me...but as I recall, recently a church was disallowed the same privilege because they wanted to use the pool for baptisms. The city disallowed the rental on the basis that it would be public endorsement of a religion. So what we have are city officials being hypocrites.

If we don't return to Christian modesty, we'll end up with Islamic prudery.

You let them go swimming and next thing the women will want to vote and drive cars. I suppose an Arab version of Maxxim would have pictures of naked female ankles.

I agree. Also, I know a public pool where this is occurring and they capitulate and kick everyone out for the Muslims (Who pay no extra fee).

Also, all of the fibers from their shirts and such clog the pool filters on a regular basis.

allowing women of faith to swim alone

interesting choices of words. i was wondering when the last time Christians were referred to positively this way, particularly in reference to making sure women were forbidden by a faith to do something.

A very, very prescient observation. And maybe some will deserve it...

Where'd you get that? Read the article! The article plainly stated it was open to all women, Jewish and Christian included.

Plus, this is a private group which pays a rental and can include whomever they want. Just like my homeschool group could rent the pool for a homeschooler swim class, or a kid can rent the place for a poolside birthday party.

So?

When I was stationed in Egypt, the Bedouin women would strip naked and jump in the Gulf of Aquba.

Not a pretty sight.
