Montana Police Have to Stop One Vehicle an Hour

HELENA, MT (AP) -- For motorists wondering whether police are working on a quota system, an answer can be found in Montana.

A new policy requires state troopers to stop at least one vehicle an hour, whether the driver has done anything wrong or not. But the driver doesn't have to be ticketed, so police officials say it's not a quota system.

State police Colonel Paul Grimstad said the rule that took effect on Monday is intended to reduce traffic accidents and drunken driving.

Montana had the highest number of alcohol-related deaths per miles traveled in a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report released in December 2003.

Of course, this doesn't happen if the car is a stolen rental with stolen tags, being driven by a bond skipping child predator...

This cannot be legal. Can it?

What are the coppers gonna tell drivers they'e stopped when they've done nothing incorrect?

You have to remember, in most counties in Montana there is no law against "open containers". In most parts of the State it is legal to "drink and drive" so long as you are not above the legal limit.

They left out the previous guidelines. I wonder what other states do? Anyone got a clue?

This is really dumb. Especially in some places out here where in the middle of the night your lucky if you see a car an hour!

A new policy requires Montana drivers to stop at least one police officer per hour.

Flash your lights and get the police officer to pull over.

Consider it a safety check, to insure that your police officers are not driving without sufficient sleep, or under emotional distress. We would not want our police officers to become a safety hazard.

YOU, as a citizen, must do your duty to insure the safety of our police officers!

I'm not sure this tells the entire story. Within the last 5 weeks our family spent several days in Montana visiting Glacier Nat'l Park. We traveled all 667 miles of U.S. Highway 2 from Idaho to North Dakota. We never saw any state troopers or local police period.

So if there is a quota, but no troopers, is there really a quota. If no one is around to hear the tree fall, did it make a noise?

By the way, the people of Montana were great.

One car an hour thats nothing

Most cars run up to 5 miles an hour over the speed limit

Thats all you need to get your quota
