ALBANY, N.Y. -- It would be sort of a scarlet letter for drunken drivers. SURVEY Should drunken drivers get special license plates? Yes, they all should. Yes, but only repeat offenders. No, they should not. Results | Disclaimer
Lawmakers in New York State are considering special license plates for repeat DWI offenders. The specific letters or numbers on the plates haven't been decided.
The bill's sponsors said the DWI plates would help police and would allow them to stop the car without further cause.
Critics said the special DWI plates would carry a stigma. But supporters counter that's the whole point. The proposal would mandate the DWI plates for anyone convicted of drunken driving three times in five years.
Can you spell ACLU?
They should just make them stand outside with the smokers...that'll teach them.
I thought people were presumed innocent till proven guilty?
I guess that doesn't apply to things that the media can blow out of proportion and get alot of teardrop media play over.
Would Teddy Kennedy get one?
Bing! You win 20 dollars.
Stupid idea to begin with.
Indeed so, and the proposal is to punish those who have been found GUILTY of drunk driving three times in five years. Such a person is an alcoholic practically by definition; in fact, it is almost always the case that someone who has just *two* drunk driving convictions meets the definition of an alcoholic.
I guess that doesn't apply to things that the media can blow out of proportion and get alot of teardrop media play over.
That's pretty callous, pal. I hope you never lose someone you love to a drunk driver.

Beat me to it. I thought every Kennedy would get one. Hope the state has enough license plates.
Second conviction should 'merit' a scarlet letter. Let the world know.
A lot of room for creativity here. License plates that look like beer-bottle labels?

How about plates for dopers too?

Been doing this in Ohio for a while now. I don't live there any longer, but I never saw one of those plates.
Shrug. I figure the drunk just has his wife/GF/Brother/sister/mother/father register the car.
Uh, won't this incite violence against people who have these plates? Ridiculous.
Yeah. Combine personalized plates with dui plates. I want mine to be ASSMAN. "Hey, it's the ASSMAN!"
"The bill's sponsors said the DWI plates would help police and would allow them to stop the car without further cause."
I guess this would be like having a never ending , intermittent sobriety check evertime you hit the road.
Why not just revoke someones license if they are convicted of mutliple drunk driving violations. But that would be toooooo easy....
This is so silly I bet the state approves it.
Uh, anyone who gets a second DWI should be doing 1-3 years in the hoosegow. It's the toleration of multiple DWIs that leads to one of these cretins slamming into some unsuspecting schlub on his way home from work, killing a family breadwinner.
Put 'em in jail!!
Of course they should. But these plates are silly, and a substitute for the kind of enforcement you describe. No surprise for the wussy NY legislature.
"Stupid idea to begin with "
The ACLU or this proposal?
