President Bush traveled to Pennsylvania State University to give a speech about Social Security reform in University Park, PA, and to speechify the Pennsylvania Future Farmers of America Convention, also at PSU. Making a day of it, in Bryn Mawr he stumped for Senator Rick Santorum, whose term expires next year.

The president will attend the National Republican Senatorial Committee dinner in DC tonight.

The Senate voted 73-24 to approve Thomas Griffith to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

Secretary of State Condi Rice met with member of the Congressional Black Caucus on Capitol Hill. She will visit Ramallah and Jerusalem this week to try to help Israelis and Palestinians prepare for Israel's Gaza Strip withdrawal.

Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld held a press conference to reiterate the administration's stance on a number of issues, most notably, Guantanamo Bay. Rumsfeld defended the facility against critics who want it closed by saying U.S. taxpayers have a big financial stake in it and no other facility could replace it. He attended a birthday party today: the U.S. Army's 230th birthday, celebrated in Arlington, VA.

QUOTE: "I've come today to tell you that there are some of us in Washington, D.C. who do not want to leave you saddled with a retirement system that's going broke, that we realize we have an obligation to address this problem. ...I'm going to continue to call upon the United States Congress, members of both political parties, to stand up, to do what's right for a young generation of Americans coming up, to fix this Social Security system once and for all so a young generation of Americans will have that same sense of security that previous generations had when it came time for them to retire."
