Repeal D.C. gun ban - (Kay Bailey Hutchison & John Cornyn backing more realistic gun law)

It is time to repeal the District's gun laws. Just consider a few statistics: Five years before the D.C. Council banned nearly all firearms in 1976, the District's murder rate fell from 37 to 27 per 100,000 people. In the five years after 1976, the murder rate rose to 35 per 100,000 people. Between 1976 and 1991, the D.C. homicide rate rose 200 percent. The national homicide rate during the same 15-year period rose just 12 percent. According to the FBI, the District has the highest violent crime rate in the nation of any city over 500,000 people. Its homicide rate is eight times higher than the rest of the country and four times higher than similarly sized Ft. Worth, Texas. The comparison is apt. Texas has some of the most constitutional gun laws in the country.

Conservatives and libertarians have long argued that the simplistic logic behind stricter gun laws ignores the ability of criminals to obtain guns, which leads to a dangerous discrepancy in fire power between criminals and law-abiding citizens. Statistics and common sense support this. "Every woman in the District of Columbia should have the ability to protect herself in her home, particularly if she is there alone most of the time," said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison Thursday. The Texas Republican has just introduced her D.C. Personal Protection Act, which aims for sensible gun laws. A similar bill is moving through the House. We urge Congress to pass both bills quickly.

Resistance will undoubtedly be stiff and hyperbolic. Said D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton: "They're trying to see to it that more children get killed." The delegate should apologize for her demagoguery. The fact is that people are losing their lives because criminals are armed while law-abiding citizens are defenseless. Repeal the handgun ban, now.

Did you know that in the first 22 months of the war with Iraq the death rate from gun fire for US Service members was 60 per 100,000?

Did you also know that in DC with it's strict gun control laws for the same 22 month period the death rate from gunfire was 80 per 100,000?

Pull out of DC NOW!

At times it seems common sense fails us. Like for instance with guns and gun control. If those of you that think gun control is so great try this test. Put a sign on your front lawn "no guns in this house". Now wait and see what happens. These good folks in Washington DC put a sign in front of their city, "no guns in this city" and look what happens.

Only the real barking moonbats amongst us will declare gun control useful, it's useful for criminals.

"Pull out of DC NOW!"

You're right. That's exactly the "logic" of the liberals' incessant mantra!

Thanks for such a clever comment!

True......when armed good guys outnumber and kill off (in acts of self defense) the armed bad guys we evolve vs the direction our nations criminal justice system has taken lately.

Get more done with a kind word and a gun than just a kind word.........

Stay safe !

I've seen that comparison. It's fun, like the number of victims of MDs compared to guns.

Yeah, but you gotta understand - I LIVE HERE! I have to patch the bullet holes in my dang boat! And I am the only one in DC without a friggen' gun! Because I, as a VA-CCW holder, winner of a presidential appiontment, member of the FRIGGIN draft board, type of person, will loose my darn job, if I am arrested for felony (simple) possession of a gun in DC, on my own property, nevermind I was born there.

I'm from the People's Republic of Maryland, but I left decades ago.
