Bill seeks to let residents keep guns for safety

A fresh move is afoot on Capitol Hill to overturn local gun laws in the District.

"Many people live in the District during the week who are members of Congress and they would like to be able to protect themselves in their homes," said Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas Republican who wrote the D.C. Personal Protection Act of 2005.

Mrs. Hutchison said if the measure passes, she will resume her longtime practice of keeping a handgun in her bedroom.

"Every woman in the District of Columbia should have the ability to protect herself in her home, particularly if she is there alone most of the time," Mrs. Hutchison said yesterday.

But one lawmaker warned the result could be dire.

"They're trying to see to it that more children get killed," said D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat.

The District's nonvoting congressional representative warned that passage of the bill would increase violent crime.

Mayor Anthony A. Williams also spoke out against the bill. "I am incensed by any proposal that is an insult to the memory of the people who have died in this city due to gun violence -- in particular the three children who have died from gun violence this year," he said.

Mrs. Hutchinson's bill would enable city residents to keep loaded handguns in their homes for personal protection. Most private handgun ownership in the District has been prohibited by law since 1976.

DC has one of the toughest set of gun laws in the nation...so how come so many people keep getting shot there? Nobody ever asks that question.

Hell, 46-thousand people a year get killed in cars in America, but who's advocating getting rid of cars? No one.

""Many people live in the District during the week who are members of Congress and they would like to be able to protect themselves in their homes"

This concerns me actually. I would have expected something along the lines of, "Gun bans are unconstitutional, we are lifting it" From the good senator from Texas.

Eleanor Holmes Norton and Da Mayor kill me. They choose to ignore the stats and the simple fact their socialist utopia went do the Sh*tter.

WHATEVER the reason this dolt is a NON-VOTING rep., it is VERY fortunate for the American people.

" in particular the three children who have died from gun violence this year," he said."

This idiot doesn't seem to realize she just made a case FOR people having handguns.

The D.C. area banned guns, and yet, 3 children are dead from gun violence.

This dolt doesn't seem to get that the ban only took guns away from people who want to protect themselves from the criminals, and left guns in only the criminals hands.

What a maroon!

It's funny how some people can have this attitude about guns (williams & norton). Yet, they never want to admit that this "faux" gun control law has NOT solved their problem. HELLO........people of DC..................people in DC are still getting killed. How is this possible if you do not allow guns in DC? Are the guns owned legally? How can a GUN kill a person if is is not in the hands of a HUMAN? Please explain this to me.

The rate of deaths of civilians by gunfire in DC is 20% higher than the rate of death of American troops in Iraq. Yet the elitist bums in Congress refuse to let DC residents protect themselves. How loathsome.

Here's an interesting article backing that up. I'm sure there are others. I wonder what liberals do when faced with facts and evidence. Deny it anyways? Pretend they didn't see it? Tell their bed fellows at the MSM to overlook that fact and make sure the people of DC never learn to read so they can read the writing on the barn. Whoops sorry about the extreme tangent there! :)

I get Delegate Norton's point, she is concerned that a 20 year old child might get shot while trying to rape a lady such as Mrs. Hutchison in Mrs. Hutchison own beadroom.

Kay should quitely do what she is constitutionally allow to do -- bear arms. Also, Kay would be better protected in her house by a 12 gauge "riot" shotgun.
