Newsweek is under intense criticism for a report it has now retracted about the American prison in Guantánamo Bay. Since we've weathered a journalistic storm or two, we can only say the best approach is transparency as Newsweek fixes whatever is broken, if anything. There is already a debate about journalistic practices, including the use of anonymous sources, and these things are worth discussing - especially at a time of war, national insecurity and extreme government secrecy, a time when aggressive news reporting is critical. But it is offensive to see the Bush administration use this case for political purposes, and ludicrous for spokesmen for this White House and Defense Department to offer pious declarations about accountability, openness and concern for America's image abroad.
It took Newsweek about two weeks to retract its report. It has been a year since the very real problem behind the article - the systematic abuse and deliberate humiliation of mainly Muslim prisoners - came to light through the Abu Ghraib disaster. And the Bush administration has not come close to either openness or accountability. The White House and the Pentagon have refused to begin any serious examination of the policymaking that led to the abuse, humiliation, torture and even killing of prisoners taken during antiterrorist operations and the invasion of Iraq. Meanwhile, the administration has stonewalled outside efforts to accomplish that task. No senior officer or civilian official has been held accountable for policies that put every American soldier at greater risk. The men who wrote the memos on legalized torture and evading the Geneva Conventions have been promoted.

A sudden taste for truth? America is tired of being fed a pack of lies. I won't subscribe to the Arizona People's Republic. I won't listen to CBS, NBC, or ABC Disney News.

I used to see a lot of newspapers on the driveways when I walked our dogs. Now I don't see them in abundance. Is everyone reading the paper early or or they concluding what I have just said?
Take a deep breath, remember that 14 people DIED as a result of the Newsweek story, then reread this drivel and try not to puke!!

The newspaper that let Jason Blaire (sp) publish numerous articles full of lies is coming down on the Bush Administration for not being quick with dealing with a problem. Hang on, my sides are hurting from laughing so hard...
Newsweek should have it's business liscence pulled so they have to close their doors over this IMO.

Overheated verbiage to be using if you afford the administration even a modicum of respect, of an assumption that it is acting in good will. It would be only fair to cut the White House some slack to criticize the press.
The press does need to report specifics on government actions and therefore they are right to report fairly on prisoner abuses. But the New York Times is overcome by its own melodrama - the result is the shrillness of this editorial.
They don't mind liars at the NYT, as long as they are their liars. The NYT has never returned Walter Duranty's Pulitzer Prize even though no one believes his pro-Stalinists stories in the 1930s about the Ukraine famine today. That's how much the NYT cares about the truth. Shame on them and Newsweak. They hate our way of life and will inflame America's enemies to harm US servicemen and Americans in general. They've no honor and no decency and no respect for the truth. How dare they lecture elected leaders when they're merely self-appointed pontificators and self-indulgent, ineffectual Leftwing toadies for America's enemies, whether they're religious fascists or socialists dictators.

This is what I don't understand. What's the big deal for people about the detainees. The constitution has protections for Amerian CITIZENS. As far as I'm concerned, non-citizens have no protection from the American Constitution. Their ass is grass otherwords.
Another thing. What is with the media constantly monitoring American troops and American interogators. How can America be expected to prosecute a war like this? You'd think the media has a real hate on for the military. Why doesn't the media spend more time monitoring the enemy. For instance, who are these men who are beheading people on Al Jazeera? How are minorities treated in Islamic nations? Exactly why are the Moslems in the Sudan murdering an enslaving non-Moslems?

IMHO, they read the liberal rags for free online. Conservative, original news sources with substantial news gathering resources are few and far between. Most of those on the right can tell when they are being fed leftist agitprop, and they respond accordingly. Although it also has to be excerpted, check out The New York Sun.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that about Darfur. I am more concerned about the Sudanese Christians and animists.
