George Galloway MP arrived in Washington last night, promising to turn the tables on his accusers in the US Senate today when he meets them face to face to reject allegations that he profited from the sale of Iraqi oil under Saddam Hussein's regime.
The powerful Senate permanent sub-committee on investigations plans to question the MP on his alleged dealings with the regime during more than a decade of campaigning for the lifting of United Nations sanctions.
Arriving in Washington, Mr Galloway said: ''If I were you, I'd get a ringside seat.'' Mr Galloway, who has complained that he was not granted the opportunity to appear before the committee prior to the report's publication, said that ''even under the Taliban you got an appearance in court''.
He rejected its findings that he was granted oil allocations allowing him profits from the sale of oil under the United Nations oil-for-food programme, and branded the committee as a tool of the US government.
The committee cited interviews with senior regime officials and documents from the state marketing organisation and the oil ministry to support its allegations. The UN scheme raked off money originally destined to buy food and medicines.
Guilty as sin, but he also thought a day in court would free him. Well, we know how that turned out......
I predict a lot of "Where are the WMD?" talk from this jerk.
I like to see this Galloway punk try to last one round with Zell Miller.
I wonder if Mr. Galloway will earn himself a contempt of congress citation? That would be a hoot-and-a-half.
This will be great television tommorrow.
Remember the old Groucho line?
"Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?"
I can't wait for the Telegraph's appeal of the ridiculous libel decision. I hope the Senate gives them a hand.
If they win can they get costs?
