Group aims at educating families about guns
Wayne County sheriff's Deputy Steve Fisher decided education was a positive outcome to the endless news reports about a child being killed because someone - often another child - found a gun and thought it was a toy.
As a result, Family Firearm Day was created. The inaugural event is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Howell Gun Club, 3210 Jewell Road in Marion Township.
"Putting (guns) in your sock drawer is not the right place," said Fisher, an NRA-certified instructor. "I was tired of hearing how another child was killed because someone found dad's, mom's, uncle's, aunt's, cousin's or whoever's gun, played with it and killed a friend.
"We want children to get a good understanding a gun isn't a toy," he added. "We want them to know the inherent dangers and receive proper training. We want to take the myths and bad stereotypes out of guns."
The program is sponsored by the Shooters' Alliance for Firearms Rights in collaboration with the Michigan Second Amendment Group, Michigan Gun Owners, and several other groups and businesses.
"SAFR is a group of concerned activists dedicated to making the voices of firearm owners heard," Barbara Stockford, SAFR president, said. "Family Firearm Day is our way of promoting safe, fun, family involvement in firearms rights issues."
The program includes a variety of activities including .22 caliber rifle shoots and instruction for trap and skeet shooting for children. Also included will be adult safety training and firearm safety training for kids.
Other activities include tracking dog demonstrations, fingerprinting kits for parents and grab bags for children, as well as free hot dogs and treats. Also offered will be the McGruff Kid Safe program.

We need more programs like this one.
Endless news reports of children being killed with guns they think are toys? Just how "endless" are such reports. My sense is that such incidents are quite rare.
Good news, and good luck to them.
Our facility is booking an NRA "Refuse To Be a Victim" session for our facility after a recently fired employee communicated a threat to a few other employees. There has also been alot of concern about child gun safety, and we are looking into having an Eddie Eagle session during our open house this summer.
we have to be cautious because there is another group saying that (leftist) parents should demand their neighbors disclose if guns are present when children go over to neighbor's homes to play.
It was a "stigma" effort.
It was a "stigma" effort.
I see value in its "filtering" effect.
They're not, but even one is far too many.
