I'll get to First Lady Laura Bush's bawdy stand-up routine in a minute. But I want to highlight a related new book out about how young conservatives are shaking up the dominant liberal media culture. It's called "South Park Conservatives." My name is listed on the cover along with many other (mostly) right-leaning pundits, websites, and bloggers, but I must confess to having mixed feelings about the honor.
The best-selling book's author, Brian C. Anderson of the Manhattan Institute, writes a fun, breezy survey documenting the rise of talk radio, FOX News, the Internet, conservative publishing, and college Republican activism. Anderson's chapter on the success of conservative talk radio and the abysmal failure of liberal Air America to replicate it is incisive. Another chapter on the blogosphere (alone worth the price of the book)

A friend-of-a-friend went out on a few dates with Coulter. Apparently, other than the foaming at the mouth, all liberals are evil shtick there's not much else to her. She's as boring as a rock and can't really hold up much of a conversation on anything other than her political views.
Plus, she's had problems in the past with pseudo-stalking her ex-boyfriends.
I would guess that he's actually a "big 'L'" Libertarian, as he's made no secret of his belief that you should be able to do anything you want with your body (i.e. being able to sell your body parts, etc). Being consistant with that view would be the legalization of drugs, but again, I've never heard him actually speak on the matter, so I don't know for sure.

Much as you'll NEVER get some Freepers to admit Dubya Bush is grossly negligent about the border situation and illegal immigration.
Non sequitur. A hypocrite is as a hypocrite does -- whether the hypocrite is Christian matters not. The nominal Christians they target are hypocrites or whackjobs of one type or another, so it isn't like their aim is off. They've always been respectful of the religion itself.
Claiming to be a Christian does not make one immune to hypocrisy nor prevent one from being criticized for being a hypocrite.
Most social conservative that I know simply don't go for this sort of language or humor. They believe that it's crass, unfunny, and profane. They feel the same way about much of the humor by people like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Robin Williams, Whoopie Goldberg, and George Carlin.
They believe that the same effect could be accomplished without the use of that sort of language or topics... Things like Christopher Reeve eating aborted fetus (for the topic of stem cell research), or Butters and his dad "taking one for the team" in the NAMBLA episode. And of course, there are lots of episodes where they just love to push right up to the limit, then take two steps back, so they can get a good, running start as they leap over that limit, just because they can (you can name just about any of their funniest episodes here, including Woodland Critter Christmas, and Cartman gets an alien anal probe).
Personally, I think that SP is funnier than ... Well, it's one of my favorite TV shows... I can't believe it's in its 9th season!
But at the same time, I perfectly understand why many social conservatives are offended by it.

Umm, how does Jesus and Christianity get mocked? Jesus is always right and eventually always wins in South Park. They've always been respectful of Christianity and Jesus on that show, though they spare no barbs for hypocrites or nutjobs that are nominally "Christian".
Every time I see someone claim that the show mocks Jesus, it makes it pretty clear that they haven't actually watched the whole show if any at all.
First off, Michelle...you're gorgeous, smart, and amazing. Second, don't let THEM (the libs) divide us. Third, you make good points but could lighten up a BIT...
BTW...I didn't hear the First Lady's jokes...anyone got a list??
But even removing that, the show is morally and, in my estimation, artistically appalling.
Profanity and vulgarity are not synonymous with humor, they are a replacement for it. Eddie Murphy is hilarious when he isn't working a room full of licentious drunks. When he is, it just isn't funny.
No, she's not. And don't call me Shirley.
WTF?? She did this??
Your post #46 on this thread is more to the point than any of the hundreds I've seen the last few days.
2nd thread on this article,
still no pics?????????
Read the 147 threads. She did all that and more!
Nobody claims it's a conservative show. Its a libertarian show, really. The creators have been quoted as saying "we hate Republicans, but really f-ing hate Democrats!"
The South Park Republican isn't someone who thinks South Park is this amazing conservative show, it's someone who is a conservative but can enjoy stuff like South Park and still be a conservative.
"Jesus shooting up the place with an AK."
This is, unfortunately, what a lot of people these days think Christianity is about. One must ask, are Christians influencing our culture or is our culture influencing Christians? And which to the greater degree?
AMEN!
Here's a link to the article, "Why I am not a Conservative," whose title Michelle borrowed for her essay, the subject of this thread. I couldn't say what her opinion is of Hayek's original, but even though it was written 45 years ago, it is amazingly insightful and appropos for the current discussions here on FR. I recommend it.

1. Those people are not "South Park Conservatives"
2. SPCs are not "moderates"
Jesus is normally a very soft-spoken figure on the show, but he does occasionally visit much wrath on Satan and his minions. And yes, Jesus may use an AK47 to do that or some other weapon that is appropriate to a given scene, but that is just good writing. When Jesus kills the evil guys, it isn't gratuitous if that is what you are thinking.
Jesus is the Son of God on the show, but he is also an approachable down-to-earth spiritual character who helps people and does His Father's Work. I fail to see how that is a bad portrayal. Jesus is always an unambiguous good guy on South Park, even when the townspeople abandon him (which has happened more than once).
The moral "And so I declare that every year on Christmas Day we should remember Jesus for what he did, "
