Feds offer $1 million reward for fugitive Chesimard

EWING, N.J. -- Fugitive cop killer Joanne Chesimard is now on the same terrorist watch lists that include Osama bin Laden.

In an indication of how badly New Jersey authorities still want to recapture the Black Liberation Army member who executed a state trooper as he lay on the ground 32 years ago, the bounty on Chesimard's head was increased Monday from $150,000 to $1 million.

State Police Superintendent Col. Rick Fuentes said he hopes the sweetened reward will encourage someone to come forward with information leading to the capture of Chesimard, who has been living in Cuba under the protection of Fidel Castro's government.

"We have pretty long institutional memories," Fuentes said at a news conference at State Police headquarters on the 32nd anniversary of the killing. "This is a debt that she owes to the residents of the state of New Jersey for the crimes she committed."

Chesimard was convicted of the 1973 murder of Trooper Werner Foerster, but she escaped to Cuba and was granted political asylum after three gunmen busted her out of what was then the Clinton Correctional Institution for Women in Hunterdon County in 1979.

Garden State officials have failed to convince Cuba to hand over Chesimard, 57, who goes by the name Assata Shakur.

Shakur is still believed to live in Havana. But a woman with a Cuban accent who on Monday answered at the number listed for Shakur in Havana's phone book said that no one by that name lived there.

At the address listed in the phone book, the woman said that Shakur had moved several years ago. A neighbor, when asked if he knew where she had moved, simply laughed and said it was "a war secret."

Maybe the $1 million may change the minds of the cash-strapped Cubans.

32 years ago? Why did they wait so long to raise the bounty? It wouldn't surprise me one bit if someone connected with government has the answer and thru the grapevine will reap the new reward.

If they catch her the courts will simply pardon her after the bleeding heart choir starts to sing and she'll go on to become the new heroine of radical chic. She'll be awarded a full professorship with honors and a lifetime sinecure at a tax-supported university heading some kind of victimology department. She'll tour the country giving speeches at other universities for 50 grand a hit and will become the darling of Paris where she will travel often to denounce the injstices of life in America.

Am I cynical? Does it get dark at night?

Critics claim the AMC's [American Muslim Council's] main political activity has been to abolish or prevent passage of antiterrorist legislation. The AMC calls itself an "active member" of the National Coalition to Protect Political Freedom, or NCPPF, which was founded in the 1960s to provide legal support to New Left terrorists in the Weather Underground, the Puerto Rican FALN and the Black Liberation Army, and which national-security specialists say was revived to push for Islamist terrorist causes.--------------"Undermining war on terror : Muslim groups weakening fed laws under guise of protecting civil liberties," World Net Daily, March 10, 2003

1970 : (GREENWICH VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE EXPLOSION- THE 'REVOLUTIONARY UNDERGROUND' WAS USING IT AS A BOMB FACTORY) But the core of the story begins in 1970, when Kathy [Boudin] managed to escape from the explosion of a Greenwich Village townhouse that the Revolutionary Underground was using as a bomb factory.
Boudin has long insisted she just happened to be there at the time. But [Susan] Braudy [in her book "Family Circle: The Boudins and the Aristrocracy of the Left" (Kopf)] shows that, in fact, Kathy was fully involved in the bomb-making plot. Indeed, she undermines Kathy's disingenuous claim to the parole board that "I was never involved in violence directly" during her subsequent 11 years on the lam.
To hear Boudin tell it, she was always simply at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people. Actually, writes Braudy, Boudin was personally involved in at least a dozen bombings across the country - including at the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol and NYPD headquarters - before the Brinks job. She also rented cars both for bank robberies and for the prison escape of cop-killer Joanne Chesimard. ...
Braudy's most important revelation, however, is showing how Boudin has consistently lied about her role in the Brinks heist - which was undertaken not, as claimed, for political reasons but because BLA leader Doc Shakur needed money to pay his mortgage and buy cocaine.
Those lies continued before the state parole board. Of her life in the underground, Boudin claimed: "My work was not doing violent work, but organizing conferences and educating people." Of the Brinks robber-killers, she said, "I had no idea who the people were."
Both demonstrable lies. --------------- "KATHY BOUDIN'S LIES," by Eris Fettmann, New York Post, October 30, 2003

And maybe those of a few Hispanic bounty hunters who could go looking for her!

"Escaping to Cuba" is probably about like "escaping to Sing Sing". I say let her rot where she is.

AUGUST 1999 late : (ITALIAN DIPLOMAT'S DAUGHTER, SILVIA BARALDINI, IS SENT TO SERVE HER REMAINING SENTENCE IN ITALY - WAS THE CLINTON ADMIN TRYING TO PLACATE THE ITALIAN LEFTWING GOVERNMENT? - see FALN, also see BLA) "...Maybe the White House is telling the truth, after all. Maybe President Clinton's clemency offer to 16 FALN terrorists really wasn't motivated by his wife's Senate campaign. The evidence: The Clinton administration is acting as though it believes that violent terrorists just don't belong in U.S. prisons.
Two weeks ago, to scant public notice, the Justice Department opened the prison gates to violent radical Silvia Baraldini. An Italian diplomat's daughter, she was sentenced to 40 years in prison in connection with several robberies carried out by black militants - including the 1981 Brink's armored-care holdup in Nyack, in which two cops and a security guard were murdered. Baraldini also has been linked to the jail break in which Joanne Chesimard - now living in Cuba - fled a New Jersey prison. And she was sentenced to an additional three years in a separate case for criminal contempt after she refused to testify before a grand jury investigating the FALN.
Over the past decade, the Justice Department - citing the violent nature of her crimes - had rejected five requests by the Italian government to let Baraldini serve the remainder of her sentence in a Rome prison. This year, however, the request was granted. Why? Because the Clinton administration felt it needed to make a conciliatory gesture in order to placate Italy's left-wing government, which was angered by the bizarre acquittal last spring of U.S. Marine pilot Richard Ashby, whose low-flying plane sliced a gondola cable in the Alps, killing 20 people...."
