"The homicide marked the second involving a Fresno police officer since 2000. In February 2000, officer Paul Hurth shot and killed his lover's husband, 43-year-old Ralph Gawor. Hurth was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 21 years in prison." This is definitely bad timing. There is an accreditation team in town looking over the Department. This is probably not a "positive."

How does a cop...live in a "posh" neighborhood??
The days of California cops being underpaid civil servants are long, long gone.

I don't know what their pay scale is, but I believe that Fresno Police Officers are among the best paid in the nation. With a little overtime they can easily afford expensive homes and vehicles.

Much as I like to joke about the Central Valley, Modesto down to Bakersfield has the nicest, most NORMAL people in the state, regardless of race or ethnicity. Some good places to eat in Fresno near the Tower district. Hot as hell in the summer though.

How does a cop...live in a "posh" neighborhood?? And since when do "posh" and "Fresno" belong in the same sentence?

Thank you, I accept on behalf of my Valley neighbors. The north end of Fresno/Clovis are awesome! Clovis Unified School District (which covers north Fresno and all of Clovis) is in the top five in the state (and there is no teacher's union...hmmmm). Our home values have doubled in two years and they keep on going (I think the school district has something to do with this phenomenon). We have wonderful restaurants and entertainment; family values; low crime; great weather (except for the average 12 days a year over 100!) I can play tennis almost year round. This is a great place to raise a family.

I took the time today to drive by the house on W. Athens, where this occurred. It was a pretty nice home so I looked around for homes in the area for sale to get an idea on its worth. I found one around the corner on W. Bedford which had just been sold, and the R/E person told me it had sold for $444,500. My estimation was that the house on W. Bedford was probably worth more than the house on W. Athens, so I am guessing that the house on W. Athens is probably worth about $400,000.
I would balk at the description of "posh" but I would also balk at "lower middle class."
And for those who want to bag on Fresno, remember that it is generally conservative, and it is the birthplace of FreeRepublic.

Yesterday, 5/3/05, former Officer Sanchez was released from custody. The District Attorney's Office said that for now, they will not file charges, however it doesn't preclude them from filing in the future.
Police Chief Dyer announced that Sanchez will not be offered his job back because the Department's investigation has determined that a violation Department policy was of such an extreme nature that immediate termination of employment was warranted.
