Troops Who Shot Italian in Iraq Cleared, U.S. Confirms

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. military confirmed on Saturday that it will not discipline troops who shot dead an Italian intelligence agent in Baghdad two months ago. [snip]

A 42-page report into the killing of Nicola Calipari and the wounding of the Italian journalist whose freedom he had just secured from kidnappers found that the Italians had failed to tell U.S. troops of their plans to drive into Baghdad airport and had ignored warning lights intended to make them stop.[snip]

"The ... investigation concluded that the vehicle approaching the checkpoint failed to reduce speed until fired upon and that the soldiers manning the checkpoint acted in accordance with the rules of engagement," the U.S. military in Baghdad said in a statement accompanying the report.[snip]

Among other findings was the following point: "Recommend that no disciplinary action be taken against any soldier in the incident." [snip]

Our boys did exactly as they had been trained. If any person derserves "discipline" it's the lying communist bag of rags Giuliana Sgrena.

Great news. Any sane person, with even a slight amount of mental activity must understand the soldiers had little choice. I see this incident in no different light then two weeks ago when a truck and red fire engine driven by terrorists tried to run a checkpoint and run their vehicle laden explosives into a Marine base. Now if those Marines did not take out those trucks with small arms fire and a TOW missile, it could have costs dozens of lives. The Italian agent should have known better. If he actually was a bonified agent. Dopes caused their own deaths, to supposedly protect a stupid commie bitch, who's soul purpose in Iraq was to stir up trouble against the coalition forces.

Always sounded to me like decorations were in order for a job well done! Do we now have to retrain anyone about how to act at a US military roadblock?

Really the only part of her story that hasn't been debunked is that they notified our people that they were coming. My suspician is that that too will be proven false in the very near future

Well said, I would suppose that a good number of Italian/Americans are serving in Iraq at this very moment.

Of course they were cleared of the charge since they were only following the rules of engagement. I am happy to hear this news. I bet it won't ever be heard on the liberal airwaves though.

You may be accurate on that. Bottom line is it was a joke from day one. I'm just glad those soldiers got off the hook.
They have a tough enough job as is.

For her selfish "15 minutes of fame", Sgrena cost somebody their life. Of course, what on earth was that "intelligence agent" thinking? Of course, I still haven't read or heard much about the mysterious third person on the scene - - the driver. Who was the driver?

That's just the cowardly Italian politicians trying to appease the communist base. No biggie - - just a joke.

I hope your right....I think you probably are. Berlusconi has these people breathing down his neck and his political position right now is somewhat tenuous. Besides it pretty hard to argue with that satellite video

It sounds like you are correct. I found an article about it on the FoxNews website. Here's a quote and a link.

Italian and the United States said Friday they had failed to agree on the circumstances of the shooting and the case had been referred to respective national authorities. Italy has launched a criminal inquiry into Calipari's death.

"Out of a dutiful homage to Calipari, and out of an indispensable national dignity that a government must have, the Italian government could not have been asked to sign off on reconstruction of the facts that as far as we know does not correspond to what happened that night," Italian Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini said Friday.

This is a pretty thoughtless thing to say.
