NEW YORK (CBS) It seems city classrooms aren't just for learning anymore. On several occasions over the past week, teachers have been charged with kissing, touching, even having sex with their students. Now some lawmakers are trying to come up with ways to prevent it.
It was the fifth such incident in a week. This time, it was a female math teacher charged with kissing a 15-year-old student at I.S. 55 in Brownsville. And on Thursday, the mayor said enough's enough.
“It is not acceptable behavior to have our teachers having personal, sexual relationships with the students that we entrust them with,” said Mayor Micheal Bloomberg.
The mayor wants to change union rules that make it difficult to fire teacher’s accused of inappropriate behavior. While the city can now remove them from the classroom, it can take years to get them off the payroll.
“At the moment, the city really has little recourse to terminate teachers who abuse their position,” said Bloomberg.
But it's not just difficult to fire teachers engaged in questionable behavior, it's difficult to prosecute them. Right now, there is nothing illegal about a teacher or administrator having a sexual relationship with a student who is 17 or older.
State Senator Carl Kruger introduced legislation back in January that would make all teacher-student sexual relationships a crime. He says now is the time to pass it.
“Once a teacher has been charged with or found guilty it becomes a much cleaner process of getting that individual taken out of the system,” says Kruger.
The teachers union says its long been open to changing the rules.
In a statement, Randi Weingarten says: "Any kind of sexual relationship between a teacher and student breaches a sacred trust and is not acceptable."
Kind of makes me wish I could figure out some way to get back in high school.
1. Get rid of the teacher's unions
2. Privatize the schools
Problem solved.
And it could happen at a liberal private school.
3. Quit teaching NARAL and SEICUS-inspired sex education.
Bush gave the ATU and NEA en extra 8 BILLION to play with. Kennedy is still drinking on the funds.

Look at National Reviews book on top liberal arts colleges. They are pretty decent. Also, Bill Bennett's list.
I seem to remember a mutual aquaintance in Brooklyn who taught in the NYC public schools (lets not use names on this forum).
May I recommend my alma mater, the University of Chicago. Your child will get a good education and I can guarantee you that they will get no sex either. ;-)

Ha ha ha ha, ha ha ha. What a lie,I mean joke. The teachers socialist union will not change anything that affects their incoming dues. I don't know which is worse, teachers unions or the ACLU.
This has all the earmarks of mass hysteria. Sounds just like the day care abuse witch hunts of 10-20 years ago, which gave us all Janet Reno.

The more I read about this, the more I wonder why this problem didn't erupt when I was in high school. Fate is so unfair.
Nothing regarding public schools would surprise me at this point. I wrote an article for FR about 2 years ago in which I stated that public schools and the teachers unions
should be designated as Public Enemy #1.

They should change the rules to allow teachers to marry. Then there would be no more sexual abuse.
