Whats so "braindead" about any cardinal picking that name? Just because of the "allegations" about Pius XII does not detract from the predecessors that carry that name, and even Pius XII most of the stuff is half-truths and outright lies. If there was even a shred of an attitude of anti-semitism in him, it was only because that was still considered socially acceptable in the christian world to bash jewish people for their religious beliefs--but even that is improbable because in one ex cathedra teaching near the end of his papacy (55 or 56 I think) he said that as Catholics, we are "spiritual semites," and Anti-semitism as such is a grave sin.

anyone else care to take pot shots at that noble Pope and such a noble name???? next one doesn't have the luxury of the verbal boxing gloves...

The Cardinals obviously chose him -- there were no reports of the Holy Spirit stuffing the ballot box or even alighting on Cardinal Ratzinger's head in the form of a dove. However either you believe the Cardinals were guided by the Holy Spirit when they made their choice (and presumably if the H.S. had been screaming "old people can't be Pope!" He would have been heard) or you believe most of the college of Cardinals is deaf to the guidance of the Holy Spirit because YOU think 78 is too old and you're sure God agrees with you.

Ratzinger knows he's a place-holder, and will do nothing dramatic.

WOW. That really -- on second thought, continue with your fantasy world :)
