4 indicted in Italian financier's death ("God's banker")

ROME (AP) - Italian authorities indicted four people Monday in the killing of Italian financier Roberto Calvi, a banker with close ties to the Vatican who was found hanging under a bridge in London in 1982, reports said.

Businessman Flavio Carboni, his ex-girlfriend Manuela Kleinzig and two men with alleged ties to the Mafia, Pippo Calo and Ernesto Diotallevi, will stand trial in October for Calvi's killing, the Italian news agencies ANSA and Apcom said.

Calvi was dubbed "God's banker" because of his ties with the Vatican's bank and its former top official, the American Archbishop Paul C. Marcinkus. He had bricks in his pockets and the equivalent of $25,500 in today's currency in cash.

Calvi's body was found within days of the collapse of Banco Ambrosiano, where he was president and in which the Vatican's bank held a significant stake. The collapse was Italy's biggest postwar banking scandal.

Banco Ambrosiano fell apart following the disappearance of $1.3 billion. The Vatican's bank agreed to pay $250 million to the Italian bank's creditors but denied any wrongdoing. Marcinkus also denied wrongdoing.

Italian prosecutors issued a report in July 2003 concluding that Calvi did not commit suicide but was killed.

British police announced in 2003 that they had begun a murder inquiry into Calvi's death after a detailed review of the case.

In December 2003, a 42-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to pervert the course of justice, and of perjury.

Isn't this the death that was rumored to be connected to the death of JPI by the conspiracy people?

Yes very odd that was. The main suspects was the Mafia but I watched a program hosted by Roger Moore which claimed the US killed him as he had made efforts to bring together The Russian Orthodox and The Catholic church.

The Cold War is like a huge library of ammunition for conspiracy theorists. I do keep my mind open as anything can happen but I think it was far, far more likely that the Mafia would have done it over money.

Still nice conspiracy theory and Roger Moore was very convincing. (It had an interesting part about Russian infiltration in the US through the Mexican border though).

Perhaps the Russian mafia and the Sicilian mafia were working together. Communism is nothing but a legal mafia anyway.

It's funny because I sat with my very Lib sister and her darling but cliche blonde daughter during the Fox special on the Conspiracy connected to the Moon Landing. I laughed soooo hard when they believed it!

The key issue here is: If the indictment waited more than 20 years, why it was made known in the week after John Paul II funeral?

IMHO, it is in bad taste. One could conclude that justice could not be served as long as John Paul II was alive.

One could ask: what obstruction did the life of JPII "the great" effect on the legal process in Italy, and in the USA (and elsewhere)?

Suspicion of CONSPIRACY??

Sounds like just another "conspiracy theory" to me.

Ho-hum.
